A half-century later, man seeks details of father's death in Tampa - Tampabay.com

Wed, Feb 8, 2012
In his pockets he carried a red comb, a small can opener, three pennies and a wallet with pictures and papers that identified him as Robert Orval Bradford Workman. An autopsy report later noted a tattoo on Workman's right shoulder, depicting three names: Crys, Robin and Teresa. An investigation found that Workman had picked a fight with Harold Wicks, then 72, the previous day on a dock near what is now the Laurel Street Bridge. "I think I'll throw this old S.O.B. in the drink," Workman reportedly said as he approached Wicks. But it was Workman who ended up in the water. Wicks and a witness, Burnett Albert Peters, then 36, were jailed on drunkenness charges. A small funeral was held and Workman was buried in an unmarked grave in Orange Hill Cemetery. • • • What Christlieb gathered about his father suggested a man at odds with himself. On one side was an adoring husband and amiable friend who worked hard and did what he could to help others. On the other, a troubled alcoholic whose demons created an abusive home life for his wife and children. "Despite most of what I've been told and learned, I believe deep down that Bob was probably a decent man," Christlieb said. "He just had a lot of problems, mostly brought on by his drinking as well as whatever demons he was dealing with, possibly from childhood." Christlieb, an editor at the Dallas Morning News, plans to write a book about his efforts to learn more about his birth family. He suspects that his mother gave him up to protect him from his father. They were divorced by the ti...

NFL Week 13: The Late Games, Prime Time and Monday Night Football - Latest Sports News

Sun, Dec 4, 2011
San Francisco (-14):  The 49ers can wrap up the division title with a win in this one and hold the inside track to the #2 seed in the NFC for the playoffs.  The Rams are dismal and may be without Sam Bradford, who re-injured a high ankle sprain he suffered in week six against Green Bay that forced him to miss two games.  That means A.J. Feeley would be the guy under center getting beaten senseless thanks to a beat up offensive line.  Happy holidays. Dallas (-4.5) at Arizona:  Kevin Kolb might be back under center this week for the Cardinals, but does it really matter?  Yes, they have four wins, of which Kolb has been the starter for exactly one of.  Of course, in the interest of full disclosure, two of the wins John Skelton picked up starting in Kolb’s place were over the Rams.  I don’t see Patrick Peterson running back punts for scores, or Beanie Wells running for 200 plus against Dallas either.  Give the points, take the win. Green Bay (-7) at New York Giants:  The Packers still have not lost since week 15 of last season in a game that Aaron Rodgers missed with a concussion.  The Giants are doing their classic second half swan dive off a ten foot diving board into a pool with three inches of water.  This time, it may cost Tom Coughlin his job should they miss the playoffs.  They’ve dropped three straight and could slip back to 6-6 with a loss here.  The team had no pass rush whatsoever on Drew Brees on Monday night and he carved them up.  What do you think Rodgers will do? Detroit at New Orleans (-9):  The Saints sliced, diced and julienned the Giants on Monday en route to a 49-24 dismantling.  Detroit has had an extra few days to try and figure out how to right the ship after losing four of six, but seeing this game on the schedule doesn’t help matters much.  Ndamukong Suh will serve the first of his two game suspension, making it even tougher for the Lions defense to generate enough of a rush to make Brees worry.  This one might be a blowout as well. San Diego (-3) at Jacksonville:  A match up of two disappointing teams.  The Chargers were expected to win the AFC West handily and compete for the AFC championship.  Instead, they’re 4-7 and losers of six straight, five of which are by 7 points or less and two decided in overtime.  The Jaguars are 3-8 and fired coach Jack Del Rio this week.  Mel Tucker is the interim coach, and while the Jaguars might be fired up, their offense has been stuck in neutral all season long.  Look for that trend to continue, and the Chargers to escape with a close win. Kreutz walks away from Saints - Tbo.com

Fri, Oct 21, 2011
Dave Rayner, Ricky Schmitt and Rhys Lloyd took turns kicking field goals and kickoffs for nearly 30 minutes following practice. RAMS: Sam Bradford missed practice again, raising the possibility that A.J. Feeley will start at quarterback when St. Louis plays in Dallas. It will be a game-time decision whether he will play. REDSKINS: Coach Mike Shanahan says starting safety Oshiomogho Atogwe (knee) is questionable and backup cornerback Byron Westbrook (hamstring) will not play Sunday. SEAHAWKS: Charlie Whitehurst is expected to get the start at quarterback in Cleveland on Sunday. Tarvaris Jackson is doubtful after suffering a strain of his right pectoral two weeks ago. STEELERS: Running back Rashard Mendenhall (knee) and receiver Mike Wallace (hamstring) practiced Friday and are probable to face the Cardinals. TEXANS: Andre Johnson will sit out Sunday's game at Tennessee as he continues to recover from a right hamstring injury. VIKINGS: Cornerback Antoine Winfield is doubtful for the game Sunday against Green Bay, meaning he will likely miss his fourth straight game with a neck injury. OBITUARY: Packers Hall of Fame guard Gale Gillingham has died at age 67 at his home in Minnesota. Gillingham was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 1982 and made the Pro Bowl five times during his career.
