Robert E. Hirschfield went to work at his family's Bay City scrap business in 1946 -

Sun, Mar 25, 2012
North America. It employs about 1,500 people in 35 locations in seven states and Canada. Among those locations are scrap yards in Jackson, Adrian and Jonesville, and management facilities in the greater Detroit area. The family is not related to the Rifkin family that owns Rifkin Scrap Iron and Metal Co. in Saginaw. Irving Rifkin's son, Leonard Rifkin, serves as the company's chairman and chief executive officer, and his three grandsons, Rick, Marty and Danny, also help run the company, with Danny Rifkin serving as president and chief operating officer. OmniSource has annual sales that exceed $1 billion from material volumes of 6 million tons of ferrous scrap and 500 million pounds of nonferrous metals and secondary aluminum, said Arnold F. Williams, who now serves as general manager of the Bay City scrap yard. Ferrous scrap includes metals like iron and steel, and nonferrous scrap includes metals like copper, aluminum and brass. "H. "As part of the OmniSource network, our new Bay City organization will pledge to maintain the same high standards of service and customer focus that you have received from H. Hirschfield in the past." He went on to say that the new company plans to review every clients' scrap program with an eye on creating added value through efficiency. Hirschfield's countless list of customers - located primarily in the Tri-Cities and within a 100-mile radius - includes General Motors, Delphi, Dow Chemical, Dow Corning and Tower Automotive. Ben A. Eisbart, executive vice president of administration for OmniSource said the acquisition fits nicely into his company's expansion plans for Michigan. "It's a scrap-rich area and an area where there is heavy industry, which uses metal in processing of their end product, " Eisbart said. "Plus, it's just a beautiful little community." Eisbart said none of Hirschfield's 45 employees will be replaced. "Our philosophy is that if there are good people in place, leave them in place, " he said. "In our growth strategy, there is opportunity up there, and our goal is to add people to an already good work force." Eisbart said the name of the scrap yard now is OmniSource-Bay City. The Hirschfield name will eventually be phased out. Hirschfield and Rosenberg also plan to stay on at the company as consultants during a period of transition they say will last about one year. After that, both men plan to retire and stay in the area. "I don't have any separation thoughts, " said Hirschfield ...
