Shirley May France Setters, Distance Swimmer, Dies at 79

Sun, Apr 1, 2012
Gris-Nez, France. Ten hours later and six miles from the cliffs of Dover, she was dragged, exhausted, out of the water. It happened again on Aug. 9, 1950, when Miss France and another American woman, Florence Chadwick, attempted what The New York Times, in a front-page article, described as “the punishing grind — 19 miles as the crow flies.” Miss Chadwick made it, but Miss France “was pulled hysterical and weeping into her pilot boat, still eight and a half miles from her goal,” The Times reported, adding that she sobbed, “Everyone’s going to think I’m a flop.” Yet she remained popular — returning to small-town parades, stacks of fan mail and meetings with celebrities like Frank Sinatra and Johnny Weissmuller, the Olympic swimmer who played Tarzan in the movies. But there was a break with her father, who she said “wanted me only for a meal ticket.” Born in Fall River, Mass., on Aug. 11, 1932, she was one of four children of John and Florence France. Her father was an oil-burner salesman. Her first husband, Douglas Smith, died in 1959. Donald Setters Sr., her husband of 48 years, died in 2009. Besides her son Donald, she is survived by another son from her second marriage, Daniel; two sons and a daughter from her first marriage, Scott, Daryl and Shelby; a sister, Carla Phillips; 12 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Ms. Setters did not quite fade from public attention. She became a hat model in New York, an actress and later a disc jockey at a radio station in Somerset. “If I have my way, I’ll never see water again,” she told The Daily News in 1950, “except in a bathtub.” Not quite. In later life, she taught swimming at the Fall River Y.M.C.A. (New York Times)
