Tanner trying to keep superstition out of three-peat - Greenville News

Wed, Feb 22, 2012
I don’t take that for granted.” Former Riverside High star Michael Roth (14-3, 1.06) is scheduled to be USC’s starting pitcher. Former Easley High standout Joey Pankake, a freshman, will start at shortstop, and Kyle Martin, a freshman from Wade Hampton, is in contention to start as designated hitter against right-handed pitchers. • Tanner said he wasn’t sure whether freshman Grayson Greiner or junior Dante Rosenberg would start at catcher Friday, but said both would play this weekend. • Tanner said former Riverside High star Jake Williams, who played in 62 games last year, will not be on the team because of “personal issues.” Williams started 58 games for USC last season, batting .268. He remains on the squad, not the active roster, Tanner said. “He and I have met numerous times,” Tanner said. “We’ve had conversation now for a few weeks and we both came to the decision – more so him than me – that it would be the best thing for him right now. I completely support him.” Williams was expected to compete for ...

Blake Griffin Will Dunk On Your Face - Wall Street Journal (blog)

Tue, Jan 31, 2012
Choosing a rebuilding effort rather than jumping to a championship-ready team seems to be suiting Adelman just fine. “With Love ascending and Beasley in need of a coach, adept at inspiring players to reach their apex, Adelman’s decision came into view,” MK Bower writes for FS Houston. “The Timberwolves won’t be title contenders in the immediate future, but their stock assuredly is rising.” * * * When top-ranked high school safety Landon Collins announced his intention to attend Alabama, his press conference attracted attention outside of the usual recruitment obsessives and crimson-clad die-hards. After Collins spoke the immortal words “I’m going to go, ‘Roll Tide, roll,’” his mother April Justin shook her head, visibly annoyed with the decision. Immediately after, she told interviewers that she wanted her son to attend LSU. The video went viral, perfect for easy cracks about overbearing mothers and awkward family dinners. But the reason for Justin’s unease was more complicated than that. As she tells it to ESPN the Magazine’s Christopher Schultz, her hesitations grew when coach Nick Saban mentioned the amount of NFL money her son would make after a successful career at Alabama, which she says wasn’t one of her priorities, during a recruiting pitch. In a further aside to Momsteam.com, she claims that Saban offered her son’s girlfriend a job working in his office – the same girlfriend she didn’t want to stand with the family during Collins’s press conference. (We’ll update with any comment from Alabama, though a school spokesman has declined comment to other outlets since NCAA rules bar the discussion of unsigned prospects.) It’s all very he-said she-said, yes, but the tension is real and unlikely to change until Collins can justify his decision on the field. “Saban’s visit left a permanent mark in her mind. After Collins arrived in Orlando for the week of practices before the Under Armour [all-star] Game, he called his mom to make it clear that he would likely choose Alabama and that he had reached this decision on his own,” ESPN’s Christopher Schultz writes. “Justin responded with a text that said she couldn’t support his choice and wasn’t going to come to the game. Collins texted back about how he loved her and that she wasn’t that kind of mom – that’s why he knew she would come. She arrived the afternoon of the game.” * * * Colleg...

Gamecocks trying to keep it loose - Greenville News

Sun, Jan 29, 2012
Tanner English, Adam Matthews and Evan Marzilli in the outfield, Christian Walker at first base, L.B. Dantzler at third base, Grayson Greiner at catcher, freshman Joey Pankake of Easley at shortstop and Chase Vergason at second base. Former Riverside High star Michael Roth, one of the pitching heroes of the back-to-back College World Series titles, returns for his senior season after earning all-American honors last season. The left-hander likes what he has seen of the newcomers, a class ranked No. 1 in the country by Collegiate Baseball. “As an older guy and having seen a couple of classes come in, this class has impressed me a lot just with the way they approach the game;” Roth said, “the way they don’t take it too seriously and that definitely fits well with the type of baseball we’ve played in the past couple of years.” (Page 2 of 2) The Gamecocks have usually been “loose” as a team, from the bullpen doing a Rockettes impersonation to spelling out messages with cups in the bullpen fence. Roth said this class is coming into a different situation from the one he entered. “Some of us have two (championship) rings on our fingers,” Roth said. “They want to do that. I think that’s little bit of extra motivation; they want to experience the feeling that we got to experience at the end of the year.” The Gamecocks will scrimmage again today and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. • Tanner Lovick, who was suspended from the team this month after an incident in Five Points, is back on the team and was at practice Friday. • Catcher Patrick Harrington had surgery recently and is expected to miss part of the season. Tanner said infielder Erik Payne will work at catcher. • The starte...
