Six-year vet Zachary Miller headed to Akron - Culpeper Star Exponent

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Soap Box Derby champions Saturday. Miller’s foresight proved true, as he held off Haven Kramb in the Stock Division finals and earned his second trip to the world championships in Akron, Ohio, with a time differential of .138 seconds. “The track was fast and I was kind of nervous, but I’m the Soap Box derby champion and it feels so good,” said Miller, 13. The seventh-grader at Floyd T. Binns Middle School went to Akron two years ago as a rally racer, but this will be his first year making the trip as a local champion. Zachary’s older brother, Tyler, took home the Masters Division crown, and rookie driver Adam Miller — no relation — came away with the Superstock Division title. The younger Miller had already qualified for another trip to Derby Downs with rally points, but in his sixth year as a driver, Zachary’s mother, Tonya, said he was focused on taking home one...

Masterson snuffs Reds in Indians' 8-1 win - Lexington Herald Leader

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Johnny Damon hit a two-run shot in the fifth inning off Bronson Arroyo (3-5). Lonnie Chisenhall added three RBIs for the Indians, who played poorly while losing three in a row last week in southern Ohio, but have turned things around to move back atop their division. "We're a resilient team," said Masterson, who became the first Cleveland pitcher to record a complete game at home since 2010. "I think we'll be able to carry this momentum on the road and have a lot of fun with it." It was the first time the Reds and Indians had faced each other as first-place teams since 1999, and Masterson made sure Cleveland came out on top. The Reds did not get a runner to second against Masterson until the eighth. Cabrera booted Jay Bruce's leadoff grounder to shortstop and Todd Frazier doubled with one out. Willie Harris followed with an RBI groundout, the first run given up by Masterson since June 9 in St. Louis - a career-best 18 innings. Masterson capped the ninth by getting the dangerous Joey Votto to look at strike three, an exclamation point on his dominant performance. "There was a little fire there," Masterson said. "I wanted to close it out." Reds manager Dusty Baker knew Masterson was capable of shutting down his team. "When he's on, he's very tough," Baker said, "and he was on tonight. His ball was moving everywhere." Masterson's record may not show it, but he's been one of Cleveland's most co...

Commentary: The view from Akron on LeBron James title - Sacramento Bee

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
What words would you offer them?" It's a fair question, asked delicately, to which thousands of people in Northeast Ohio would love to know the answer. Only he didn't really answer it. "I'm sitting here as a member of the Miami Heat," James began. "The hard work and dedication that we put in these last two years to get to this point, it was unbelievable. I wanted to become a champion someday. I didn't know exactly when it would happen, but I put in a lot of hard work. For me, I'm happy. I'm very excited. I'm very happy right now to be a champion. Nobody can take that away from me." The words "Cleveland" and "Cavaliers" never fell out of his mouth after winning his first championship. In truth, it's probably better that way. Cleveland was his starter wife. When the Cavs looked old and haggard to him, he left for the supermodel in a thong. That was never more evident than the early hours of Friday morning. There was nothing James could say in that moment, wit...
