Mervin R. ‘Bud' Greenman

Elks Lodge. He enjoyed snowbirding, fishing and working in his carpenters shop. Bud is survived by his daughters, Sharon Pride of Hemet, Calif., and Colleen Greenman of Bend; son Larry Greenman of Walton; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters Hazel Bottcher and Francis Thill. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at the Lebanon IOOF Cemetery. A memorial service will be held later. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Contributions in his memory may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and sent in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Frederik Meijer, Grocery Store Pioneer, Dies at 91

Fred Meijer joined him in running it. In 1962 the Meijers added departments like clothing, pet supplies and jewelry, the same year that Sam Walton opened his first Wal-Mart and two and a half decades before the first Wal-Mart Supercenter was opened. The Meijer one-stop shops started proliferating throughout the Midwest, though competition from other retailers and Fred Meijer’s desire to keep the company private limited their growth. Today, Meijer is the nation’s 15th-biggest private company ranked by revenue, according to Forbes, with about 200 stores in five states, along with gas stations and car washes. Though Mr. Meijer would still visit the office almost every day, he was particularly interested in philanthropy later in his life, and gave to local causes ranging from the arts to the local hospital, said Mark A. Murray, Meijer’s president. Mr. Meijer met his wife, Lena, when she was a cashier in the original Greenville Meijer store, and married her in 1946.
