Does the Bronx matter? - The Riverdale Press

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Bronx voters will carry him to victory. Just after 5 p.m., Mr. Espaillat and his staffers handed literature to people coming off the No. 4 train at the corner of Kingsbridge Road and Jerome Avenue. Most walked by. But a few minutes later, former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer arrived and as people recognized the former borough president and walked up to get a picture (sometimes a kiss), Mr. Ferrer directed them Mr. Espaillat’s way: “Say hello to your next Congressman, Adriano Espaillat,” he said.

Comic actor in Beatles' movies, Victor Spinetti dies at 82 - San Jose Mercury News

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Milk Wood," both films starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. He also played the concierge in "The Return of the Pink Panther." Spinetti was co-author of the script and did two voices for "Romeo, Juliet" -- Armando Acosta's 1990 film which featured 108 cats and the actor John Hurt. The difficulty with the script, Spinetti told The Associated Press in a 1988 interview, was blending such things as cats and cars with Shakespeare's classic verse. "Some cats talk about cars so you have to try to get this into the script without the audience jolting out of their seats. Of course, you cannot rewrite something like the balcony scene," he said. Barbara Windsor, a star of the "Carry On" films, said Tuesday that she had visited Spinetti at his hospice last week. "He didn't look ill. He looked great. He was swearing a lot, like that would get rid of the illness, and we just laughed," she said. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.

Hillman Curtis, a Pioneer in Web Design, Dies at 51

Sun, Apr 22, 2012
After it broke up he took night classes in Photoshop, he told interviewers. By then, already in his 30s, he had landed a few part-time design jobs before being hired for a low-level position at Macromedia, where he worked his way up to art director. Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Curtis is survived by a son, Jasper, a daughter, Tess, and his sisters, Madeleine Curtis and Rebecca Curtis-Cassacia. Long after designing his last Web site, Mr. Curtis remained an important presence in the imagination of Web designers. And professional online journals, which referred to him as “the Michael Jordan of Web design” and “the Grandmaster of Flash,” remained fascinated by his decision to give it all up. “It seems like you had it made,” an interviewer said recently on the Web magazine the 99%. “Why did you move on?” Mr. Curtis answered that he had always wanted to make films and had accomplished his goals as a designer. He detailed those goals in a 2002 interview: “The reason for designing new media is simple — to subtly and quietly change the world.” ... (New York Times)
