MSO cellist Peter Loran Spurbeck remembered for excellence

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
I appreciated that," said Cho, who now lives in Washington and performs around the country. Mr. Spurbeck was born in Potsdam, N.Y., and got his bachelor's and master's degrees and performing certificate at Indiana University. "His parents realized how good he was and that he was going to be a performer," said Sam Spurbeck. "So they made sure to move him away from hockey, which he loved to play, but they had to think of his hands." He was, however, a devoted baseball fan from the time his father took him to Brooklyn Dodgers games. "He was a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Memphis Redbirds," said Sam Spurbeck. And he did the box scores at every game, something he learned from his father. That interest in detail was in every aspect of his life, from baseball to doing the family budget to teaching to performing. "He aimed for perfection," said Janet Edmonds, a violinist and friend of the family. Mr. Spurbeck is survived by his wife and son, sisters Susan Webb and Meg Weston, two grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Forest Hill Funeral Home, and the service will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church. Graveside service immediately follows the funeral at Forest Hill. (The Commercial Appeal)
