Bob graduated from a two-year technical program at Boston’s Wentworth Institute on the eve of World War II. A classmate introduced him to Norma Brigham Phelps of South Hero, Vt., on a college holiday weekend. They married Aug. 2, 1942, and celebrated their 60th anniversary shortly before Norma’s death at 80 from the complications of a stroke. During the war Bob divided his working time between defense industry technical work for General Electric’s Schenectady, N.Y., plant and service in the U.S. Navy. After discharge the vast majority of his working life was spent at the GE-operated Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady where Bob proudly served on an independent, problem-solving team that consulted with any and all departments on the technical problems that had them stumped.
