Go to Nashville for a song and a weekend - Greenville News

Sun, Apr 22, 2012
The oysters are highly recommended, as are the Pad Thai sushi roll and the Boston Cream Pie. But be prepared to share - it’s a lot of pie. The New: The Patterson House Yes, it gets its own category. I kind of wanted to hate this place, mainly because there was over an hour wait to get in and a curtain separated the dining/bar area from the small waiting area. It all felt a little too first class vs. economy for me. Too hipster. But I loved it. The creative bar is known for even more creative drinks and it serves them up with style. Emily, our mixologist for the evening, answered any question we had with knowledge and finesse and the Part and Parcel, with St. Germain, house-made grapefruit bitters and Prairie organic grapefruit vodka, she made me was so good I ordered another one. To avoid the wait and the overly hipster crowd, Emily suggested coming to Patterson (www.thepattersonnashville.com) on a weeknight. For the Kids Now, Nashville is great for a romantic getaway but it offers tons to do with kids too. A great spot, especially coming up in spring is the Nashville Farmers’ Market (http://nashvillefarmersmarket.org), which offers a wide array of cooking, food and music events throughout the year. The outdoor-indoor market is also a colorful and reasonably priced stop for lunch. I’m told by local mom Amanda Leuthard the zoo is also a pretty cool place, with its historic Grassmare farm and Jungle Gym, one of the largest community-built playgrounds in the country. And if you’re looking for a good restaurant for the kids after the zoo, Leuthard suggests Carniceria San Luis. The butcher shop/taqueria features big smokers out front, which translates to an incredible chicken dinner and amazing tamales, says Leuthard. A meal at Carniceria has become her family’s zoo tradition. If you stay closer to downtown and the Vanderbilt/Hillsboro area, give Fido a try. The eclectic eatery offers tons of vegetarian and meat options alike and is a perfect and reasonable brunch spot, and a favorite of celebs like Taylor Swift, who we saw munching yogurt and granola on one visit. Bosco’s is another great kid-adult option. It has a great beer selection and a good kids menu so it’s a win-win, says Leuthard. Much like Nashville itself.

In This Case, It's Fun To Hit 30 - Hartford Courant

Sun, Apr 1, 2012
Hartford coach Jen Rizzotti would be on Providence's list to replace Phil Seymore. Dailey said Sunday she is not interested in the job. Home Away From Home Kansas State women's basketball coach Deb Patterson seems resigned to the fact that the Wildcats are perennial 8-9 seeds and have been sent to Connecticut three times in the past four tournaments. "The facts are, we are always in UConn's bracket," she said. "What's exciting to me is we finally put ourselves in position to have the opportunity to advance. We are in Connecticut and playing Connecticut." ...

Florence Green, Last World War I Veteran, Dies at 110

Wed, Feb 8, 2012
Britain’s National Archives. That Mrs. Green went unrecognized for so long owes partly to the fact that she served under her maiden name, Florence Patterson, and partly to the fact that she conducted herself, by all accounts, with proper British restraint, rarely if ever flaunting her service. It also owes to the fact that her life followed the prescribed trajectory for women of her era: by the time the 20th century had run its course, Mrs. Green had long since disappeared into marriage, motherhood and contented anonymity. With the death in May of Claude Stanley Choules, an Englishman who served aboard a Royal Navy battleship, Mrs. Green became the last known person, male or female, to have served in the war on either side. Her death, at a nursing home in King’s Lynn, in eastern England, was announced on the Web site of the Order of the First World Wa... (New York Times)
