Joseph Mattioli, the Founder of Pocono Raceway, Dies at 86

Sun, Jan 29, 2012
The Philadelphia Inquirer that he had once received a $400 million offer to buy the track, but had refused it. “It has to stay in the family,” he said. Joseph Reginald Mattioli Jr. was born in Old Forge, Pa., on May 14, 1925, to Joseph and Mary Marzacco Mattioli. He served as a Navy medic in the Pacific during World War II. Using the G.I. bill, he enrolled in the dentistry program at Temple University after the war. There he met Rose Nocito, a podiatry student, whom he married in 1948. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Looie McNally and Michele Mattioli-Kulick; a son, Joseph III; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His wife, children and grandchildren all work at the raceway. Bald, bearded and with a booming voice, Mr. Mattioli liked to hop aboard a bulldozer at Pocono when some stretch of ground needed to be smoothed. “It’s his sandbox,” his grandson Brandon Idgalsky said in 2000. Asked on Friday whether his grandfather had ever run the track at Pocono, Mr. Idgalsky said, “He never got behind the wheel of a racecar, but he never drove too slow.” ... (New York Times)
