Sheldon N. Lavner, businessman, enjoyed outdoors

Ellicottville. He had a hunting lodge in Scio. He attended the University of Buffalo and served in the Coast Guard Reserve in 1954. He was co-owner and operator of Electric City Paper Mill in North Tonawanda and in the early 1970s became plant manager of Buffalo Batt and Felt Co., where he worked until his retirement. After his retirement, he moved to Ellicottville to ski and golf, and in later years, he moved to Rancho Mirage to enjoy the warmth, mountains and palm trees. Robert W. Schwartz of Tonawanda, a retired jeweler, died Thursday in De- Graff Skilled Nursing Facility in North Tonawanda. He was 84. A native of Rochester, Mr. Schwartz worked in sales at Kay Jewelers for many years before opening his own store, the Diamond Den in Kenmore, in 1977. He retired in 1992. Mr. Schwartz was a lifetime member of Hiram Lodge and was a member of the BPOE 860 Elks Lodge. Lewis T. Fisher, 96, co-founder of Melody Fair

Frank M. Abbate bought an old barn in Derby and started Lake Shore Playhouse, a summer stock theater. In the mid-1950s, Mr. Lewis and Mr. Abbate founded Melody Fair in North Tonawanda, a theater-in-the round that initially operated beneath a tent. The seasonal venue, located in the Wurlitzer Park neighborhood, hosted nationally known musical productions and performers, as well as variety shows, comics and even an ice-skating show. His All Star Theater Series also brought productions to Kleinhans Music Hall during the fall and winter. Melody Fair was sold in 1980, when Mr. Fisher retired after suffering a brain aneurysm years earlier. It operated sporadically for another 23 years under various owners and amid recurring financial problems, and was demolished last year to make way for a retail store. (The Buffalo News)

Elizabeth “Betty” Mohr of the City of Tonawanda, a retired teacher and active community volunteer, died Monday at the Weinberg Campus in Amherst. She was 90. Born in North Tonawanda, she was a Navy Wave during World War II. She was a teacher at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf before teaching at Tonawanda Elementary School. She retired in 1978. Miss Mohr was active in the community and taught lipreading at Tonawanda High School. She was a volunteer with the DeGraff Hospital Auxiliary and also served as a past president.
