Driver's drowsiness blamed for Bronx bus crash that killed 15 - Los Angeles Times

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Connecticut casino. On the return trip to New York’s Chinatown, the bus was speeding at more than 30 mph over the limit when it struck a right-hand guardrail at 78 mph. The vehicle flipped onto its right side and skidded more than the length of a football field before ramming into a highway sign support pole. The impact shoved the pole into the bus, shearing the roof off just above the windows like a can being opened. More than 30 people were injured. “Fatigue and speed are an especially lethal combination,” NTSB Chairman Deborah A. P. Hersman said in a statement. “Unfortunately, in investigation after investigation, we are seeing the tragic resul...

Does the Bronx matter? - The Riverdale Press

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Bronx. The borough is home to about 19 percent of registered Democrats who could weigh-in on the race.  Still, much of the focus has been on Manhattan.  Last weekend, The New York Times brought that reality home to the doorsteps of its 4,784,000 subscribers, with its endorsement of Clyde Williams.  The Times editorial page said the district included “parts of the South Bronx.”  Then, the New York Post’s endorsement of state Sen. Adriano Espaillat on Sunday mislabeled th...

Correction: Obit-Neiman story - Charlotte Observer

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
NEW YORK In a June 21 story about the death of artist LeRoy Neiman, The Associated Press incorrectly reported the amount of money Neiman had donated to his alma mater and gave an incorrect name for the school. Neiman gave $9 million to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, not $3 million to the Art Institute of Chicago.

Commentary: The view from Akron on LeBron James title - Sacramento Bee

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Yes, even Darko Milicic was given a ring for sitting on the bench with the Detroit Pistons in 2004. Anthony will now squirm - under the glare of the New York spotlight - at the questions that chased LeBron for years from Cleveland all the way to Miami. Late night spilled into the early hours of Friday morning when James completed his postgame interview. When he was done, he picked up the Larry O'Brien Trophy and his NBA Finals Most Valuable Player trophy. "Hey, man, I'm an NBA champion," he said, almost as if he didn't believe it himself. Love him or hate him, LeBron James played his finest basketball when his team needed him most during these NBA Finals. That's indisputable. So is this: He is 27, the same age as Michael Jordan when Jordan won the first of his six titles. It might have taken nine years to win the first one, but James has plenty of time to win plenty more. It's just a shame it didn't happen with his starter wife. Cleveland Indians - TeamReport - Chicago Tribune

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
ERA in seven road starts, but pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings to get the win. It was a nice way for the Indians to begin a challenging 10-game trip that will take them from Houston to New York to play the Yankees, and then to Baltimore. It was also another step forward for Jimenez, who has struggled with his consistency for much of the 2012 season but finally appears to be on a roll. Despite having a winning record, Jimenez came into the game with a 5.00 ERA in his first 13 starts. However, he has been much better in his last four, all in the month of June. His win Friday improved Jimenez's record to 7-5 and lowered his ERA to 4.

Artist Mahaffey White embraced spirit of adventure

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Memphis, where she developed her interest in art at Lenox School. She graduated from Central High School and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1938, while living in New York, Mrs. White married organist Richard T. White, who was raised in Memphis and moved to New York to study. They were married 71 years and had two sons. In 1950, the family returned to Memphis and Mrs. White became active in local efforts to improve public education and equality. She was a founder of the Memphis Better Schools Committee. When she was 52, Mrs. White returned to college full time at the Memphis Art Academy, received a master's degree from the University of Memphis and eventually became associate professor of art at Shelby State (now Southwest Tennessee Community College). After jewelry making, fashion designing, print making, pottery and sculpture, Mrs. White delved into photography, which became her primary medium for the next 25 years. Her works in black and white as well as color were exhibited in numerous private galleries, colleges and other venues in several states. "She delighted in being a student," said Memphis artist Patti Lechman, her close friend who taught with her and later taught her photography at Southwest Tennessee Community College.
