Archie P. Solyst, 97, of Austin, died Friday, June 22, 2012, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.Archie was born May 5, 1915, in Garden City, Iowa, to Otto and Aleta (Seglum) Solyst. During World War II, Archie served honorably as an Army medic and was involved in the transportation of German prisoners to the U.S. Prisoner of War Camps. For more than 40 years, he was a resident of Garden City and served on the Architectural Review Board there, of which he had been a member and former chairman for nearly 30 years. He retired to the North Fork nine years ago to be closer to his grandchildren. Jockey Club and Jockey Club steward, in charge of administering the rules of racing and betting at New York tracks.  In addition to his son, Dr. Gilman, who lived for many years in Garden City, N.Y., is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Margaret Werber, who was given a Congressional Gold Medal in 2009 for her service with the Women Airforce Service Pilots during World War II; a daughter, Jane Fenwick Gilman; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. “You’re talking about a man that made a difference,” Ogden Mill Phipps, chairman of the Jockey Club, said of Dr. Gilman in an interview. “Sometimes he wasn’t diplomatic, but his judgment was something you’d wish everybody had. He believed a horse should be sound and ready to run or he shouldn’t be on the racetrack. He protected the bettor, and it didn’t matter the size of the purse or the reputation of the trainer.” ...
