Roger J. Miner, Judge Who Valued Neutrality, Dies at 77

Wed, Feb 22, 2012
York. The Supreme Court nonetheless decided in New Jersey’s favor. Roger Jeffrey Miner was born in Hudson on April 14, 1934, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany and a law degree from New York Law School, where he was managing editor of the law review. He served in the Army as a lawyer in Japan and Korea, then returned to Hudson to practice with his father. He was corporation counsel for the City of Hudson in the early 1960s, assistant district attorney of Columbia County in 1964 and district attorney from 1968 to 1974. In 1976 he was elected to the New York State Supreme Court, and he served as a trial judge until 1981, when President Reagan named him a federal district judge. In 1985, Reagan elevated him to the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In 1997, Judge Miner assumed senior status, with a reduced caseload, but he continued working until days before his death. He is survived by his wife, the former, Jacqueline Mariani; his sons, Larry and Mark Miner and Ronald and Ralph Carmichael; his brother, Lance; and six grandchildren. Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand, Democrat of New York, was a law clerk for Judge Miner, and both he and his wife campaigned for her. When Judge Sonia Sotomayor, a colleague of Judge Miner’s on the appeals court, was nominated to the Supreme Court in 2009, he endorsed the nomination, which was confirmed, saying he could not classify her ideologically. He had endorsed her in a different way in 1995, after Judge Sotomayor issued an injunction to end the baseball strike. When club owners appealed to him for an immediate stay of the order, he denied it. (New York Times)

A Good Life, A Good Death: What my parents taught me by example - WCNC

Fri, Feb 17, 2012
Nell and Stuart Watson were married for almost 63 years. Until the last six months of their lives when we moved them up to an assisted living center, they spent that whole time in the same town, Albany, Georgia--more than half a century at the brick home they built on Hilltop Drive. I don’t think they ever spent more than a week apart. Before Alzheimer’s took away their memories, I insisted that they sit down on camera and tell me about how they met (a wedding reception) and how they got engaged (he never even proposed – they just agreed) and where they honeymooned (Gatlinburg, then an unspoiled mountain village.)“There was never any get-down-on-your-knees saying, ‘Will you marry me?’” my dad told me one day as we sat at a picnic table in Mallard Creek Park. “We just said, ‘When we get married we'll do this or that.’”Ever the good investigative reporter, I discovered my mom noted her wedding expenses in a far...
