OAK HARBOR -- The Oak Harbor Public Library houses the Local History and ... - Fremont News Messenger

Mon, Nov 28, 2011
Liske said. Those who can't find the information they need in Oak Harbor are encouraged to visit the Harris-Elmore Public Library or the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center in Fremont. Visitors also will find scrapbooks and old obituaries, plus meeting notes from several Oak Harbor clubs -- including the garden club, the Grange, the Thimble Club, the businessmen's association, the arts council and the Country Culture Club. They also will find a small book on parliamentary law, dated 1922, and Robert's Rules of Order. Both were the property of the Literary and Social Club. "The Literary and Social Club was instrumental in starting the library in 1908," Liske said. Normally, the center does not house enough items to warrant special exhibits. An exception was made this summer, when items from the now-closed Rocky Ridge Elementary School were displayed in the reading room. "We had about eight or 10 poster boards and six or eight tables full of stuff," Liske said. The library board approves donations. There is no place to house large items, but smaller ones are welcome. "It can be as small as a token," Liske said. "Anything that says, 'Oak Harbor,' or anything that was made in Oak Harbor." He hopes more people will volunteer to guide visitors in the local history and museum center. "It needs to grow. It needs somebody more than me," Liske said.
