Trenton High boys basketball aims to end long drought - The Times of Trenton - NJ.com

Sun, Feb 19, 2012
Camden by three and Camden again in overtime. Four other times it lost before the semis to the eventual champions. In addition, early elimination came against Westfield (59-54 in 1963), Hillside (59-56 in ’64), Neptune (63-62 in ’74; 61-58 in ’76) and Bridgewater-Raritan (74-70 in ’92; 42-41 in ’98; 50-47 in ’01). Last year it was knocked out in the opening round by North Brunswick, 62-61.More recent losses in the tournament have included lopsided scores, like losing to Atlantic City by 21, Pennsauken by 20, Freehold Township by 11 and Rancocas Valley by 19. They were disqualified in 2009 and lost in the prelims two years ago. This year’s team is 18-6 and was eliminated from the Mercer County Tournament in the quarterfinals last week. What many consider the major reason for the relative fall-off since ’03 is the budget cuts that eliminated sports at the city’s four middle schools. While financial issues remain, interim Superintendent of Schools Raymond Broach indicated the Board of Education will this fall reinstate the athletic programs, along with fine arts. “I am a strong advocate that we ought to be providing strong education as it relates to the development and readiness of students throughout the grades,” said the long-time educator. “Although I believe we have to do it well, in terms of developing the middle-school opportunities, we have to have strong models in place. And while we may not be able to do it overnight, we need to consider the value added to the middle-school level as students transition. “Quite honestly, (high school) programs are not as strong as they perhaps could be without a feeder program, and promising students would be coming to the high school with their abilities — whether it’s basketball or band. I have been trying to shore up things that needed to be and establish even stronger learning environments and programs for the students here.” Sounds like help is on the way. “When we lost the middle schools,” Mack said, “you could se...

Live more while doing less yard work - Greenville News

Sat, Dec 10, 2011
Why? I’m not 100 percent sure, but I have at least two thoughts on the subject. First, we chose a home that’s open to the outdoors, with large windows that overlook the Reedy River and a park-like hillside beyond. We’re immersed in nature here, frequently grabbing binoculars to observe the red-tail hawks that nest nearby and the blue heron that occasionally sweeps up and down the watercourse. Recently, we even spied a couple of river otters. Though I’m rarely outside, I never feel closed in. I’m captivated by the changing seasons and varied wildlife just beyond our windows. Most days, that’s enough. Second, Tim and I moved because we were ready for a change. With children grown, we wanted to re-evaluate our habits and lifestyle. While our lives were family-centered, I could indulge in my greatest pleasure — gardening — just by walking out the back door. Now I want to do things that take me further afield. Plus, my ideas of what I want in the garden hav...
