Shields roughed up in the Bronx, loses to Yanks - Wilkes Barre Times-Leader

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Shields (6-4) was sabotaged early by the Rays' ever-shifting defense as New York scored two unearned runs in the first thanks to an error by shortstop Elliot Johnson. The Rays made three errors in the game and have six over the last three games. Tampa Bay is second in the American League with 49 errors. "It's a virus right now, a virus we have to get rid of," Maddon said. "We need some kind of infield antibiotic. ... Right now it is biting us pretty good." The Yankees returned home from a 6-3 road trip to beat the Rays for the third time in four meetings since Tampa Bay swept a season-opening three-game series. Nick Swisher hit an RBI double after Raul Ibanez was walked intentionally. Pettitte (3-2) pitched two-hit ball for 7 1-3 innings, striking out 10 in New York's ninth win in 12 games. "Whether it's a streak or it's not a streak, I just like it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of his tea...

Maurice Jones-Drew and Jacksonville Jaguars at odds over contract - Los Angeles Times

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Jones-Drew signed it, but times have changed quickly. Minnesota's Adrian Peterson got a seven-year deal worth $100 million before last season and other running backs, like Tennessee's Chris Johnson and Philadelphia's LeSean McCoy, also have since received contracts that dwarf that of Jones-Drew. Poor guy. All he wants is a little respect -- and a whole lot more money. Judge blocks union election at American Airlines - Lexington Herald Leader

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
April. He issued an injunction barring the board from conducting any further election-related activities. "This decision is a disgrace and a travesty," said Candice Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Communications Workers. She pointed to comments from Senate authors of the bill containing the 50-percent rule, who said it was not to be applied retroactively. Bruce Hicks, a spokesman for American, said the case was simple. Current law requires support from at least 50 percent of employees before an election can be held, he said, and the union "admitted it was unable to meet that mark." The dispute had gained attention outside the airline industry. Leading Democrats in Congress had asked American to allow the election to go forward. The ruling comes as AMR Corp.'s American, which filed for bankruptcy protection in November, separately seeks to break contracts it negotiated with other unions that represent pilots, flight attendants and mechanics.

Judge blocks union election at American Airlines - Lexington Herald Leader

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
It's a terrible decision for workers," said Candice Johnson, a spokeswoman for the union. "It's workers who are suffering irreparable harm by being denied their democratic right to vote." The union had joined the case on the mediation board's side. Democrats in Congress, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, have taken up the union's cause in letters to the airline. American Airlines spokeswoman Missy Cousino said the company was pleased with the temporary order and the judge's opinion that the airline's legal position would probably prevail. "Now, as we have hoped all along, the court will have a full opportunity to review and rule on whether or not the correct law was applied in the (mediation board's) decision to call for an election," she said. American and parent AMR Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection in November. American is seeking to void contracts with its three current unions, which represent pilots, flight attendants and mechanics. A federal bankruptcy judge in New York is scheduled to rule on American's request next week.
