Roger L. Nelson — Rochester

U.S. and Canada. Roger and his wife were foster parents for 25 years with hundreds of children passing through their home.Roger was a member of the Zumbrota V.F.W., a member of the Wanamingo Lions Club and enjoyed serving as Tail Twister. He was a member of the Wanamingo volunteer Fire Department and even spent time serving as the Wanamingo town cop. Roger enjoyed being a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Roger retired from Farmland Industries in 2007.Roger is survived by his children, Scott (Sandy) Nelson of Mazeppa, Cynthia (Darryl) Flom of Dennison, Michael Nelson of Rochester, Laurel (Tim) Schacht of Rochester and Amy (Daren) Walk of Rochester; grandchildren, Cole, Taylor, Sam, Cody, Britany, Maly, Jamie, Rosie, Cory, Charlese and Maddox, and his foster children; sisters, Gladys Ullevig of Apple Valley and Evelyn (Lloyd) Kunde of Kenyon; and sister-in-law, Peggy Nelson of Kenyon. Michael 'Mike' Gerber — Rochester

Luther College, Mankato State University and Southwest State University, majoring in English literature. Following college, he worked as the Planner at the Citizens Action Council in Zumbrota. He was then employed by Olmsted County as the director of the Community Action Program for 15 years. On Sept. 3, 1991, he married Val Reburn in Las Vegas.Mike was an avid sports fan. He often claimed he won many bets that have yet to be paid. He was a talented writer of short stories and poetry. Esther Novella Maiwald — Zumbrota

On Nov. 3, 1938, she married Alvin Maiwald. The couple farmed near Lake City. They later divorced. Esther helped support the family by selling eggs and weaving rugs. In 1966, she moved to Zumbrota, and in partnership with her daughter, purchased Elm’s Apparel. The store was renamed Corner Dress Shoppe. Esther retired from the business in 1984.Esther enjoyed writing short stories and had numerous published in various magazines. She had a passion for gardening and chose to grow flowers rather than vegetables. She referred to flowers as “food for the soul.”In the 1990s, Esther was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. As the disease progressed, she shared a home with her daughter. In 2007 she moved to St. Brigid’s of Hi-Park in Red Wing. She died there on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011.Esther’s spirit lives on in her three children.
