Could Kansas State's Martin top USC's list as Horn's replacement? - Greenville News

Sun, Mar 25, 2012
Frank Martin, who will be involved in the CBS games Saturday and Sunday. Another relatively unknown mid-major coach on the rise doesn’t feel like the right way to go even with former successful Winthrop Coach Gregg Marshall succeeding again at Wichita State. The Omaha World-Herald recently reported Marshall turned down an offer of $2 million per year to coach at Nebraska and that may have something to do with his name not being connected to the South Carolina search. The Omaha newspaper reported Marshall earns $900,000 plus bonuses from Wichita State and has a contract that runs through 2018 that automatically renews each year. That adds up to six more guaranteed years so the price to get Marshall out of Wichita State might be prohibitive even for Hyman who has implemented several strategies to bump up Carolina’s reserve funds. Hyman said last week his department is in the kind of financial position that will allow it to pay for a proven major college coach. That translates to the $2 million range, but buying out Marshall might be an unreasonable expenditure. To me, the next coach should be Martin, son of Cuban immigrants from Miami who was an assistant at Cincinnati to Coach Bob Huggins, followed him to Kansas State and then took over when ...

Duncan's ministry is close to home - Greenville News

Thu, Jan 26, 2012
I thought God wanted me to do.” With renewed focus, Duncan completed his work at North Greenville (a two-year school at the time), majored in religion at Furman University, studied voice at Winthrop University, and proceeded to the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. While at the seminary, Duncan accepted a pastorate at a small church in Ranger, Texas. In 1990, he was called to preach at Barnwell First Baptist. In 2007, he answered the call at Wrenn Memorial, which had a reputation for long pastoral tenures. Namesake John Wrenn served 25 years as pastor between 1939 and 1964, and John Everhart served 35 years from 1964 to 1999. The move to Wrenn meant Duncan would be ministering to a community that once knew him as a rebellious teenager. “I was not a very nice person then. I knew that a lot of people would remember that,” says Duncan. “But the message is, God changes people.” Each Sunday, he delivers that message to about 130 parishioners, many of them people who have served in the community for a long time. “I’ve been in four churches as a senior pastor and a couple others as an assistant pastor,” says Duncan, “and this church has some of the finest individuals I’ve ever served. They love the Lord and they love people.” “There’s a willingness to serve,” says Duncan, pointing out the the handmade cabinets in his office that were donated by a member. “It’s a joy to be a pastor to these types of people.” It concerns Duncan that most of his members are more than 35 years old, in part because he wants a congregation of varied ages and in part because older members mean more funerals. “The hardest thing in the ministry is watching people suffer. Sitting by a person as they die is hard, no matter their age,” says Duncan. “In the past year, we’ve suffered the loss of three faithful members, and two of the deaths were very unexpected deaths. That hurts.” Being part of a small, close-knit church also makes the losses more difficult. “I wouldn’t take anything for the privilege of serving as a pastor, but it hurts when you see faithful members suffering with cancer, or grieving the loss of a son or a spouse.” The best part of the job, says Duncan, is witnessing the same change that he experienced. “The best part is seeing people genuinely come to a personal relationship with the Lord,” says Duncan, “and seeing the difference God makes in lives.” ...
