Jeffery sits out drills at combine - Greenville News

Sun, Feb 26, 2012
South Carolina players at the combine, joining strong safety Antonio Allen, cornerback Stephen Gilmore, defensive end Melvin Ingram, defensive tackle Travian Robertson and offensive lineman Rokevious Watkins. Ingram has found a pretty decent workout partner and mentor leading up to the combine - Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, the 2011-12 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Joby Branion is the agent for Ingram and Miller, which led to the two working on linebacker drills together in California. Following the same success curve as his workout partner would be fine with Ingram. “I pray to God I do because he had a tremendous impact,” said Ingram, who will perform on-field workouts today. NFL.com draft analyst Gil Brandt has Ingram listed as the 8th best prospect in the draft, regardless of position; and the second-best defensive end.

Sonny Wilson, bartender at Alex's, was Midtown icon

Fri, Feb 24, 2012
Mr. Wilson was born near Starkville, Miss., and made his way to Memphis when he was 16, about a year before Alex's opened on Jackson Avenue near Watkins. Mr. Wilson started there sometime in the mid-'60s, working for several years as one of four African-American servers who wore white jackets while waiting on customers. "(Mr. Kasaftes) sort of took Sonny in and gave him work," said Mr. Wilson's widow, Frances. "He loved that old man." Mr. Wilson met Frances about the same time he started at Alex's. She was a young college student from Clarksdale selling hot dogs at the Vance YMCA. Mr. Wilson would stand guard over her at the stand, scaring away persistent suitors, until they eventually fell in love. They were married 46 years. Mr. Wilson had the same chivalrous attitude on the job, where he was known to tip his hat to female customers and walk unescorted women to their cars. Though he worked other jobs over the years, Mr. Wilson, an unflappable wit and jokester, stayed on at Alex's after Alex Kasaftes' death and the bar's ... (The Commercial Appeal)

Coaching paths from Furman, Clemson and Vandy come together - Greenville News

Sun, Feb 5, 2012
Morris offense, “of course when you have Dwayne Allen as your H-back and some of those other guys we have, it’s not hard to like it.” If they had players like Dwayne Allen and Sammy Watkins at Vanderbilt in the spring of 2010, the college football neighborhood in Nashville, Tenn., might be a different place. Caldwell wound up in the middle of the new offense, just in a different location, thanks to that triangle of coaching connections that binds Clemson, Furman and Vanderbilt.
