Six-year vet Zachary Miller headed to Akron - Culpeper Star Exponent

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
The seventh-grader at Floyd T. Binns Middle School went to Akron two years ago as a rally racer, but this will be his first year making the trip as a local champion. Zachary’s older brother, Tyler, took home the Masters Division crown, and rookie driver Adam Miller — no relation — came away with the Superstock Division title. The younger Miller had already qualified for another trip to Derby Downs with rally points, but in his sixth year as a driver, Zachary’s mother, Tonya, said he was focused on taking home one of the nearly five-feet tall trophies the local champions are awarded. “He was determined to win the local race this year,” Tonya Miller said. “He wanted that big trophy and that big check,” she continued, referring to the $1,000 check each division winner receives to help offset the cost of the trip to the world championships. Zachary, who finished third in the Stock Division last year, wasn’t only rewarded for his speed Saturday, though. He also earned the division’s Best in Show award with a flame-decorated speedster sponsored by Autumn Care of Madison. But all trophies in the world and hoopla that surrounds them are lost to Zachary. He’s focused on Akron. “I’m going to Ohio, and I can’t wait,” Zachary told eve...

Rangers rally but come up short, 11-7 to Rockies - Lexington Herald Leader

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Arizona on June 14 - the Rangers didn't even allow more than three runs in a game. The Rockies, who won for only the third time in 16 games, led 5-0 after Tyler Colvin and Chris Nelson had consecutive two-out, two-run singles in the third. After Colorado scored three more times in the fourth against Lewis (6-6), Wil Nieves and Dexter Fowler - the Nos. 8 and 9 batters - homered on consecutive pitches in the fifth off reliever Michael Kirkman for three more runs and an 11-1 lead. "They put runs on the board. They hit the ball hard all day," manager Ron Washington said. "We might have had a chance to win it if we put some more runs on the board, but we had to score 12 to win and we only put seven on." Nelson Cruz homered twice for two-time defending AL champion Texas (44-28), which lost for only the third time in 14 games and still has the best record in the majors. Since ending May with consecutive home losses of 10-3 and 21-8 against Seattle, the Rangers also had a 12-1 loss at Oakland. This time, they trailed by double digits against one of the National League's worst teams before a six-run fifth that left Colorado starter Josh Outman one out short of the re...

Charlotte native has high hopes at Olympic swim trials - Charlotte Observer

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
The past two summers I’ve been in the top six in the 100 free, and that’s what it will take place-wise, to make this team,” Robison said. Charlotte has an unusual preponderance of freestylers, from another homegrown talent in Ricky Berens (a 2008 Olympian) to the strength in numbers of SwimMAC Carolina’s Team Elite, which has at least four legitimate contenders in the freestyle events. Robison, who graduated from Charlotte Latin, competed numerous times as a young swimmer in Charlotte against Berens and the Patton twins (Matt and Sean). Matt Patton - who now swims in Michigan and whose best chance will come Monday, in the 400 freestyle - and Berens are also strong candidates to make the Olympic team this week. Robison believes Charlotte’s swim success came in part because of the great competition. “Part of it is that the stars just lined up so that Ricky, the Pattons, myself and several others all came through about the same time and pushed each other,” Robison said. “We raced in a way that a lot of kids don’t get to race at until they get to college.” ...
