Letters: Putting it all on the line - Longview Daily News

Sat, Oct 8, 2011
Minimum wage would not be what it is today if it were not for the hard work of many different unions and their members putting it all on the line. Jean Slagle Silver Lake Obituary pricing I have to say I am very disappointed in the Longview Daily News. I learned today that they are charging for an obituary, when this service was once free. Now you can only include the deceased name, age, date of death, spouse, and date, place and time of funeral arrangements. A person can no longer include surviving children, siblings, parents or grandparents, unless they want to pay for it. I was told, an average obituary costs about $100. How sad to hit a person at their lowest. The Daily News should be ashamed of themselves. I am very seriously considering cancelling my subscription, To charge for an obituary, that is just too m...

Eleanor G. Hoffman, 99, noted for her folk art skills

Thu, Sep 22, 2011
Western New York. For many years, she operated a gasoline and auto repair station with her husband of more than 56 years, Charles L., who died in 1987. The couple maintained a vacation home on Silver Lake in Perry, which became a family gathering spot. Mrs. Hoffman was interested in auctions and antiques, and she repaired and refinished vintage furniture to sell on weekends from her home. She was adept in folk arts such as caning chairs, quilting and braiding rugs. She also used a full-size loom in her home to make rugs. In her spare time, Mrs. Hoffman bowled and played bingo. Survivors include four daughters, Marie Keppner, Gerry Baker, Ruth Wolff and Linda Schueler; and four sons, Charles, Robert, Gary and David. Services will be private. (The Buffalo News)

Heather) of Minneapolis; and great-granddaughter, Olivia Susan.Elaine’s grandchildren fondly remember their days in Rochester swimming at the Holiday Inn South, feeding the geese at Silver Lake and having treats from the deep freeze with Grandma and Grandpa. While grown up and scattered to both coasts, Elaine’s grandchildren appreciated her phone calls and sent her photos of their endeavors via an electronic picture frame so Grandma could keep track of them.Elaine was also “mother” to her two cats, Polly and Maggie. They provided her with companionship and warm snuggles. Many thanks to Elaine’s neighbors, Bryan and Corinne, Renee and Virginia for their kind attention to her over the years.Elaine enjoyed an active, full life and celebrated her 90th birthday with a big party in March.Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.Memorials are suggested to the Lourdes High School Building Fund.On-line condolences are welcome at (Post Bulletin)
