Pearl River. Kevin went on to lead the country in both scoring and free throw percentage his senior year at West Point, something no player since has accomplished. His dad coached basketball at Sacred Heart High School in Yonkers, was an assistant at Fordham and now is an assistant to his other son, Jerry Jr., the head coach at Pearl River, where Kevin’s son recently starred for the Pirates. In 2003, when I invited Kevin Houston to speak at the annual Scholar-Athlete of the Year dinner, he told me his wife Liz had been diagnosed with scleroderma, which my daughter Tracy has battled for 15 years. Liz’s ordeal brought our families closer together before her death in 2009. We’ve shared some happy moments, too, like in January 2007, when Jerry Sr. figured prominently in a segment of “The 50 Greatest Moments at Madison Square Garden.” In February, I wrote about Kevin’s “Dream Hawaiian Wedding” to Pearl River’s Eileen Bellew, whose FDNY firefighter husband John died in 2005 trying to escape a fire in the Bronx. She was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, in 2005 from Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Conn., where she served as special assistant to the president for five years until April 2011. Early in her religious life, she taught in several Buffalo area schools: Blessed Sacrament, Mount St. Mary, St. John the Baptist, all in the Town of Tonawanda; and St. Mary’s Seminary in Buffalo. From 1980 to 1982, she worked with the Jesuit Refugee Services at Ban V’hai camp in Thailand. Returning to Buffalo, she became director of religious education at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Colden, and in 1987, she was co-director for two years at St. Columban’s Retreat Center in Derby.
