Tragic house fire, accident round out top stories for 2011 - Fort Scott Tribune

Andrew Daniel Pelzer, 27, driver of the Yamaha, died at Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott. Seabolt was taken to University of Kansas Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. 3. A Mapleton man died Aug. 2 following an accident on U.S. Highway 69 about six miles south of Fort Scott that set off a multi-vehicle collision. Mark Scharenberg, 59, was driving his 2004 Nissan pickup truck southbound on U.S. 69 and went left of center on the road, striking a Westar Energy pickup truck head-on. Scharenberg died in the crash. Four other vehicles were also involved in the accident but no injuries were reported. The accident took place on U.S. 69 just north of Deer Road across from Faith Christian Center. The Bourbon County Sheriff's Office, Garland Rural Fire Department and Kansas Department of Transportation helped at the accident site. 2. An investigation continues into a house fire that occurred Oct. 13 at a home on Grand Road just south of Fort Scott. Once on scene, emergency personnel found the male resident of the home, Brent A. Bollinger, 25, with burn injuries. He was transported to Mercy Health Center and later flown to the University of Kansas Hospital. A second victim, Bryson D. Bollinger, 2, was also found with burns and transported to Mercy Health Center. He was then transferred to Children's Mercy in Kansas City and then to Shriners Children's Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. A body found inside the home was identified through dental records as Brenna Nicole (Stewart) Bollinger. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas State Fire Marshal were contacted to assist local authorities in determining the cause of the fire. 1. A Sept. 8 accident at Kansas Highway 3 and Maple Road in Uniontown killed two area residents and left another injured. A semi flatbed truck was northbound on Kansas Highway 3 and a General Public Transportation van was southbound on K-3. The van attempted a left turn into Uniontown, in front of the semi. After the vehicles collided, the semi drove into the east ditch on K-3 and the van was knocked into the west ditch and caught fire. There were two fatalities and one person injured from the van. The van driver, Sara McClure, 24, of Fort Scott, and passenger Melony Beerbower, 28, of Uniontown, were killed. Passenger Joshua Holder, 30, was flown by medical helicopter to Freeman Health Systems in Joplin. The driver of the semi, David Buergin, 48, of McCune, was taken to Mercy Health Center where he was treated and released. Agencies on the scene were the Kansas Highway Patrol, Bourbon County Sheriff's Office, Bourbon County District 3 fire departments, the Fort Scott Fire Department and Mercy EMS. An act of heroism came from the tragic accident. Danny Graham, of Uniontown, was presented with the Kansas Highway Patrol Honorary Trooper Award on Nov. 4 in the Fort Scott City Commission office for his actions after witnessing the fatal two-vehicle crash.

The Bourbon County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to Hidden Valley Lake, a private recreational development in Mapleton, the evening of May 21 after a report of a disturbance. Officers arrived shortly after 9 p.m. and found Enloe, who had suffered "several stab wounds to his body," according to a news release. Enloe was transported to Mercy Health Center where he was pronounced dead. A continuance was granted in the case in September. The next court date is scheduled for 9 a.m. Jan. 25 before Judge Rebecca Stephan. Valorie Leblanc is the prosecutor and Gil Gregory is the defense attorney. 9. In March, members of the public packed the Fort Scott City Commission meeting room to hear a proposal to reopen the golf course. City Manager Dave Martin addressed the Fort Scott City Commission and audience members to explain the proposal, which consisted of the city purchasing the 150-acre golf course and all carts, equipment, buildings for $500,000. He added $100,000 would be paid to Cindy Carney, widow of the late owner, Pat Carney, with the remaining $400,000 financed at 3 percent interest for five years. The city's annual payment is $87,000, and will be paid for with $50,000 from the half-cent county-wide sales tax, $25,000 from the Promotion of Industry fund and $12,000 from the general fund due to savings in personnel changes.
