Carols, the College of Staten Island's Starlight Ball and Staten Island University Hospital's charity ball. Mrs. Salvatore also brought her artistic vision in the creation of elaborate themes and table centerpieces for each event. Additional board memberships included the Staten Island Botanical Garden, the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, the Alice Austen House and Staten Island University Hospital. She and her husband, Peter, were also known for opening their elegant home to a wide circle of friends, hosting annual parties for the Fourth of July and New Year's Eve. Mrs. Salvatore was named an Advance Woman of Achievement in 1989. She was 73. Read her full obituary here. B>April 4: Ray TaylorAfter a tour in the Navy during the Korean War and a brief stint with Consolidated Edison, Ray Taylor followed in his father's footsteps and joined the NYPD in 1957. He worked the 5th Precinct in Manhattan before being transferred to the Crimes Against Persons Squad on Staten Island. It was there that Mr. Taylor made an arrest of the notorious John Gotti. He was recognized as an expert on organized crime and was instrumental in starting the NYPD's Joint Organized Crime Task Force in the late 1960s. Following his retirement, he opened the Claddagh Gift Shop, which became a Forest Avenue icon and the hub of the borough's St. Patrick's Parade. One of his personal highlights was leading the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade down Forest Avenue as grand marshal in 1992. Mr. Taylor was 79. Read his full obituary here.
