Wheldon was killed when a fence post intruded the cockpit and struck Wheldon's head, causing non-survivable injuries. Wheldon's car had become airborne after going over the rear tire of Charlie Kimball, traveling 325 feet across the track before impacting the fence and eventually the fence post. Per the report, contact between James Hinchcliffe and Wade Cunningham triggered the 15-car pileup, but "this initial contact was an occurrence common to racing as was each subsequent contact." Wheldon was part of the second chain reaction of incidents, maintaining the lower line until the collected vehicles of Vitor Meira, E.J. Clarice is the mother of nine children: Richard (Susan), Rodney (Leslee), Terry (Teresa), Kenneth (Christy), Julie (Mike) Goodman, Bobby (Michelle), Michelle (Kimball) Willard, Michael (Kimberly) and Connie. She is the grandmother of thirty-four and has eighteen great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her mother; father; sister, Joyce; brother, Ralph; and son-in-law, Mike Goodman. After graduation from Millard High School, Clarice moved to San Diego where she met her future husband, Royal at an LDS Stake Dance. They were married in 1958 and moved to Provo where Royal completed his teaching degree at BYU. While in Provo, Clarice gave birth to their first child. Don was born in Las Vegas on September 12th 1958 and spent his childhood there. His family moved to Utah during his teenage years and after finishing high school he enlisted in the Army. After being honorably discharged he began his career working for Western Rock Products in the road construction industry. When his father started his asphalt paving company, G.M. Aldred and Sons, he went to work for him learning the business and developing friendships along the way. After his father retired, Don ended up back in Las Vegas where he became a Superintendent for Sage Construction. He worked there until health reasons forced him to retire. More than anything, Doc was very proud of his family.     Doc is survived by his wife, Laurie, three children Scott (Whitney Kloss), Lisa (fiance Dustin Kimball) and Erik; his mother, Donna Hall; sister Darla (Gary) Fitch; brother Darin (Tracy) Bicknese; mother- and father-in-law, Leo and Maxine Smith; sisters-in-law Julie (Steve Sharp) Howard, Kathy (Todd) Merkel, Jody (Bryan) Hagan, Becky (Joel) Merkel; brother-in-law Rick (Cheryl) Smith; 17 nieces and nephews; and 16 great-nieces and nephews.
