Wych was born May 11, 1921, on a farm in Grand Meadow Township, rural Washta, Iowa, the son of George H. and Nettie M. (Pippett) Wych. He attended school at Grand Meadow, where he played basketball and baseball. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1938. After graduation, he helped on the family farm and worked for neighbors when help was needed. He also played basketball and baseball with the Washta Town Teams. Later, he lived with and worked for the Glen Townsend family for two years. Joe was drafted into the United States military on Oct. 22, 1942. He was assigned to the Army Air Force after reporting to Camp Dodge. He then went to Sheppard Field, Texas, to begin aircraft engine mechanic school. Later, he we...

Kenneth especially enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren.He is survived by his children Karen (Jerry) Skifter of Grand Meadow, Kathleen Hintze, Scott (Kim) Merkel, Todd (Kathy) Merkel and Sara (Jon) Warren, all of Spring Valley; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; four sisters, Rose Polikowsky and Arlene Starkson, both of Rochester, Shirley Schroeder and Lorraine (Bob) Reiland, both of Eyota; two brothers, Ray (Eilene) Merkel and Paul (Donna) Merkel, both of Spring Valley; and a stepbrother, Art (Sharon) Merkel of Rochester. On Aug. 12, 1958, she married Glenn G. “Tommy” Thompson in Grand Meadow; he survives. Elaine was a homemaker and later became a nurse’s aide when her youngest child reached junior high school age.
