Sitka Cemetery still open for burials - Parkersburg News

Sun, Apr 1, 2012
II. Hall said her grandfather's funeral was held there in 1938, a few years before she was born, but the church was not actively used then. Carol Ward, 82, who was born in Sitka and now lives at the Glenwood Retirement Community, recalls growing up near the church. Although her family did not regularly attend there, she visited it from time to time in her youth. "I remember playing there," she said. Community members rallied about 25 years ago to repair the church's deteriorating roof and floor. Additional restoration work was done between 2002 and 2008. Gessel said she and her husband mowed the grass in the portion of the cemetery behind the church before the township trustees took over maintenance of it. The people buried there "deserve to have a clean decent area here," she said.

Chris Peck: Last words are first with readers - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Wed, Jan 11, 2012
And they're fascinating. On the same day I learned about Eula B. Massey, further exploration of the obituaries led to these memorable tidbits about Greater Memphis lives: -- Rev. Glenwood Paris Roane Sr. died on Dec. 30. He was best known in Memphis as a minister at Second Congregational United Church of Christ. But he had a whole other career -- 26 years as a U.S. diplomat in places like Kenya, Egypt and Liberia. -- Richard "Dick" Benson of Cordova died on Tuesday. He worked as a plant manager for Pepsi Cola, but his family clearly was most proud of the fact that he had donated 19 gallons of blood to those in need over his lifetime. -- Sarah Baker Ryan, a mother and grandmother who died on Wednesday, touched thousands of lives because she worked as a schoolteacher for 51 years -- the last 10 years in DeSoto County Schools. Eula B. chose a busy week for her death. The period from New Year's Eve through the first week of the new year historically is the busiest time for newspaper obituaries. At The Commercial Appeal, we'll likely publish about 1,700 obits of people like Eula B. Massey this month. By year's end, the obit pages will have told the last details of the lives of more 18,000 people in Greater Memphis. People like us. Chris Peck is editor of The Commercial Appeal.
