Rosemarie Butman — Austin

Rosemarie was a devoted mother and wife, raising three children with Les in Austin. In later years, Rosemarie and Les purchased Glen Lake Animal Hospital in Excelsior, Minn., and relocated to the Waterford neighborhood in Shorewood, where Rosemarie directed her creative talent and love of home and hearth into interior design and real estate, spending winters with Les at their home in Naples, Fla. She was also committed to various organizations and charities, including the Peanuts Chapter of Children’s Hospital, to her volunteer work at St. Therese of Deephaven and St. Ann Catholic Church of Naples, and to her interest in political action through leadership positions in League of Women Voters. For the past 2 1/2 years, Rosemarie enjoyed her home and friendships at the Summerwood Community in Chanhassen.Rosemarie is survived by her three children, Barbara Butman McCall and son-in-law Michael McCall, Lisa Butman and Jack Butman and daughter-in-law, Leslie Winton Butman; her grandchildren, Eric Roach (Lindsay), Evan McCall, Elizabeth Roach, Parker Butman and Taylor Butman; a brother, Sam Albert of Ironwood, Mich.; sisters, Lamese Davies of Green... Kristin Jones of Sweet Springs and several cousins.She attended Louisiana High School and Gem City Business College in Quincy. In the early 1950s she lived in Lexington and Excelsior Springs before returning to Louisiana. She was employed by Stark Bro’s. Nurseries in Louisiana as a secretary for several years in the early 1960’s and then as a receptionist/secretary at Abel Oil Co., in Louisiana from 1968 until her retirement in 1992. Upon retirement she moved to Shelbyville then Green City and Sweet Springs to be close to her family. She had lived at Sweet Springs Villa since 2005 due to deteriorating health.As a child Louise was an accomplished accordion player. As an adult she enjoyed gardening and dancing. In later years she enjoyed babysitting her granddaughter, walking and spending time with her family. Tracks before selling the company in 1986. “They never borrowed a dime,” Glenn Pauls said. “My dad never wanted to build a big company.” Mr. Pauls was working as a mechanical engineer and living in Excelsior, Minn., west of Minneapolis, in the early 1970s when the inspiration for an indoor skiing machine took hold. An avid outdoorsman who had invented a ski boot and binding system, he was training for a cross-country ski race by running the roads around his home. His habit was to run after work in the late afternoon or early evening after dark, and slipping on unseen patches of ice made him begin to imagine a mechanical trainer that would allow him to work out safely — without leaving the house. The crucial element was a flywheel mechanism that allowed the machine to simulate the resistance that skis encounter from snow. One prototype required actual skis and ski boots and bindings; another used a sofa pillow as a waist pad. Mr. Pauls originally called it the Nordic Jock; his wife, Florence, who eventually took over the sales and marketing, talked him out of that, saying he would lose half his potential customer base, women, because they would be displeased with the name. At first he did not intend to sell the invention at all, said Terri Pauls, who was a nationally ranked cross-country skier. She was a talented guitar player and vocalist, and in her younger days performed in a local band.Ruby is survived by her two sons; Gordon Watts of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and Douglas Watts and wife, Janet, of Blue Springs, Missouri; five granddaughters, Tamara, Jennifer, Kelli, Molly, and Cindi; five great-grandchildren, Melissa, Landon, Harrison, Brigham and Grayson; and one great-great-grandson, Maxwell; one brother Carl Joseph Thomasson, and wife Marion of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; one nephew, Brett Thomasson, Oklahoma, and one niece, Ann Thomasson, Kansas City, Missouri.She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter-in-law, Paula (Macoubrie) Watts, and great-granddaughter, Michelle (Banning) Caton.A Celebration of Ruby’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, September 1, 2011, at the Bittiker Funeral Home, 1201 North 65 Highway, Carrollton, MO, with Reverend Jeremy Payne officiating.
