Michael J. Pullano, special-education teacher, coach

High School, then moved to Lockport High School, where he retired in 2009 as a special-education teacher. Mr. Pullano earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and his master’s degree in special education from Buffalo State College. He was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Lockport, and he enjoyed landscaping and NASCAR racing. Survivors include his wife, the former Monica Ross; a son, William R.; his mother, Arlene Tompkins Pullano Smiedala; two brothers, Gerald and Richard; and a sister, Mary Antonucci. A memorial Mass will be offered at 11 a. m. Saturday in St. Mary Catholic Church, 6919 Transit Road, Swormville. (The Buffalo News)

So, between 1946 and 1951, St. Ann Academy shared space with the fledgling Anna Maria College until Bishop John Wright, Worcester's first bishop, invited the new college to settle on an old 293 acre country farm estate in Paxton known as Mooracres, which the Sisters purchased in 1951 for $55,000. Sr. Bernadette, herself a graduate of St. Ann Academy, was destined to play a pivotal role in the growth of Anna Maria. She joined the Sisters of St. Anne following her high school graduation, and after professing her vows in 1937, went on to earn degrees from the University of Montreal in Quebec and a doctorate from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. After 10 years of teaching in Montreal, Sr. Bernadette returned to the United States to teach at Anna Maria where she joined the college's early pioneers in planning the college. She served as chairwoman of the Biology Department and then as academic dean under president Sr. Irene Socquet, her friend and mentor. The two sisters were builders in different ways. Thanks to Sr. Irene, a new building sprouted up on the campus every 18 months. However, it was up to Sr. Bernadette to fill those buildings with students. Indeed, that's exactly what she did.
