Trenton High boys basketball aims to end long drought - The Times of Trenton - NJ.com

Sun, Feb 19, 2012
North Brunswick, 62-61.More recent losses in the tournament have included lopsided scores, like losing to Atlantic City by 21, Pennsauken by 20, Freehold Township by 11 and Rancocas Valley by 19. They were disqualified in 2009 and lost in the prelims two years ago. This year’s team is 18-6 and was eliminated from the Mercer County Tournament in the quarterfinals last week. What many consider the major reason for the relative fall-off since ’03 is the budget cuts that eliminated sports at the city’s four middle schools. While financial issues remain, interim Superintendent of Schools Raymond Broach indicated the Board of Education will this fall reinstate the athletic programs, along with fine arts. “I am a strong advocate that we ought to be providing strong education as it relates to the development and readiness of students throughout the grades,” said the long-time educator. “Although I believe we have to do it well, in terms of developing the middle-school opportunities, we have to have strong models in place. And while we may not be able to do it overnight, we need to consider the value added to the middle-school level as students transition. “Quite honestly, (high school) programs are not as strong as they perhaps could be without a feeder program, and promising students would be coming to the high school with their abilities — whether it’s basketball or band. I have been trying to shore up things that needed to be and establish even stronger learning environments and programs for the students here.” Sounds like help is on the way. “When we lost the middle schools,” Mack said, “you could see how certain high school programs declined. Basketball went down dramatically. Track went down dramatically.”Coincidence? “Think about it,” assistant basketball coach Bryan Caver said. “No title game since 2003? Not a coincidence.” Sharron Grady has been in the Trenton school district since the 1970s and actually taught both Mack and boys’ basketball coach Greg Grant. She also coached cheerleading and girls track. Director of athletics for two years now, Grady believes Trenton High basketball is poised to return to its glory days. “I definitely think it’s on the way back,” she said. “The kids have a different attitude, a different focus. The kids are excite...
