RC Owens dies at 77; 49ers 'alley oop' receiver - Los Angeles Times

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Owens worked in public relations for J.C. Penney Co. and later in a California office for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He returned to sports to work in marketing for the Oakland Stompers soccer team. In 1979, Bill Walsh hired him to organize 49ers training camp, and Owens was reunited with the franchise that gave him his start. During more than two decades in the team's front office, he ran alumni relations for a franchise that would go on to win five Super Bowls, served as the point man for the club in the community and even donned a red suit and white beard to play Santa at Christmas. Nicole Gisele, longtime administrative assistant to Hall of Fame coach Walsh, remembered Owens as an unfailingly upbeat ambassador for the franchise: "It was his motto: 'I'm two steps away! I'll be right there!' " "You name it, R.C. did it for the players," former 49ers cornerback Eric Wright said. "Guys looked up to him. He was a mentor to a lot of the younger guys and a big brother to all of us." Owens is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughter, Melinda Grissett; son, Kelvin Owens; stepsons Ken Morrell and Anthony Salazar; stepdaughter Shelly DiStefano; and 17 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Glide Memorial Church, 330 Ellis St., San Francisco. sam.farmer@latimes.com ...

Rangers rally but come up short, 11-7 to Rockies - Lexington Herald Leader

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Since ending May with consecutive home losses of 10-3 and 21-8 against Seattle, the Rangers also had a 12-1 loss at Oakland. This time, they trailed by double digits against one of the National League's worst teams before a six-run fifth that left Colorado starter Josh Outman one out short of the required five innings to be eligible for his first victory. "It was a wild game. They came out strong swinging the bat. We had a chance to come back," Cruz said. "We battled, and showed no matter what the score is we're going to go out there and give whatever we've got." Lewis struck out six with no walks, but gave up 11 hits and eight runs in four innings. The right-hander had two complete games his previous three starts, and allowed only 11 earned runs over 44 innings his last six games. Rex Brothers (3-2), the third of five Colorado pitchers, threw two scoreless innings despite allowing leadoff doubles in both. Outman was the first Rockies starter to go on short rest since manager Jim Tracy's decision this week to go with a four-man rotation. Even given extra pitches and another chance through the heart of the Texas lineup, Outman got a no decision. "At the end of the day, the team won, and that's the big picture," a clearly disappointed Outman said. "We got a team win. We came out and played. Besides one inning, we played a great game against the best team in baseball." Six players had at least two hits for the Rockies, who won for only the third time in 16 games. They got their first win in 11 games this season against AL West teams. "I don't know that we've had a better offensive game all year long," Tracy said. Outman had two outs in the fifth before Adrian Beltre and Michael Young had consecutive RBI singles to make it 11-3. The lefty slammed his glove against his leg in frustration when he was pulled from the game. "Nothing that I'm going to repeat that went through my head," Outman said when asked what he was thinking. "Trying to give the...

Marty Springstead, 74, Managers’ Bane as A.L. Umpire

Fri, Jan 20, 2012
Championship Series, three World Series and three All-Star Games. He was behind the plate for two no-hitters, both by otherwise run-of-the-mill pitchers: Clyde Wright of the Angels, who no-hit the Oakland A’s in 1970; and Mike Warren of Oakland, who no-hit the Chicago White Sox in 1983. A witty, voluble man both on and off the field, Springstead was not shy about arguing with players and managers; he twice led the league in ejecting them. (Orioles Manager Earl Weaver, who once pulled his team off the field and forfeited a game in a snit over one of Springstead’s decisions, was a particular nemesis.) But he was also known as a mentor to young umpires and a riotous storyteller. “The damn pitch is coming at you 100 miles an hour, and you don’t know what’s coming, ... (New York Times)

Eternal Returns: Coco Crisp and Athletic Rebuilding - FanGraphs (blog)

Thu, Jan 5, 2012
Not everyone from the 2011 Oakland Athletics is leaving town. Last night Buster Olney reported that the As had re-signed their center fielder from previous two seasons, Coco Crisp, to a two-year deal guaranteeing the 32-year old $14 million dollars with an option for a third season. Some may doubt whether Crisp is really worth the money, particularly given his health record, but the more interesting question is what this me...
