Obituaries of note: Mel Hancock, Wyatt Knight, Jim Lennon - Washington Post

Springfield. As a businessman, Mr. Hancock delved into Republican politics. He lost a 1982 GOP primary for a U.S. Senate seat to incumbent John Danforth and lost the 1984 election for lieutenant governor to Democrat Harriett Woods. He finally won office by prevailing in a four-way Republican primary for Congress in 1988 and then winning the general election in the Republican-leaning southwest Missouri district. Wyatt Knight actor Wyatt Knight, 56, who starred in the 1980s “Porky’s” movies, was found dead Oct. 26 near Kula, Hawaii, on the island of Maui. Maui police said he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A family statement dated Nov. 4 said Mr. Knight had struggled with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and had a bone marrow transplant in 2003. Mr. Knight’s best-known role was Tommy Turner in the “Porky’s” comedy trilogy. Jim Lennon basketball official Jim Lennon, 85, who officiated in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and went on to become a conference supervisor of officials, died Nov. 4 of lung failure on Long Island, his son John Lennon told the Associated Press. Mr. Lennon, a former high school basketball coach, was a middle school principal and administrator in Lynbrook, N.Y., from 1962 to 1987. He officiated in the East Coast Athletic Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference and later became supervisor of officials for the ECAC from 1970 to 1978. — From news services ...

Baltic Lutheran Church, Baltic, S.D., and East Nidaros Lutheran Church, Baltic, S.D., 2001-2006; and Grace Lutheran Church, Sturgis, S.D., 2006-2011. He married Diane Wilken on June 9, 1973, in Danforth, Ill. They were blessed with two daughters, Jennifer Suzanne, and Stephanie Marie. He married Susan Villmow on Nov. 19, 2005, in Colton, S.D. He loved to sing and act and was involved in numerous plays and vocal concerts. He was recently involved in the Sturgis Community Theater and Sturgis Community Cantata. He was president of the Sturgis Kiwanis Club. He was also active in the Sturgis Alliance of Churches. He was involved in church leadership beyond the congregation throughout his ministry. He was currently serving as the dean of the Bear Butte Conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He is survived by his wife, the Rev. Susan Villmow Fox, Sturgis and Buffalo, S.D.; daughters, Jennifer (Ron) Schultz, Winona, Stephanie (Jesse) Zuerlein, Menomonie, Wis., and Melissa Rieger, Buffalo, S.D.; sons, Scott (Maranda) Pogany, Katterbach, Germany, and Robert (Kim) Rieger, Huron, S.D.; grandchildren, Zachary Schultz, Jayda Zuerlein, Jacob Rieger, and Gabriel Rieger. An additional grandson will be born in October. He is also survived by one brother, Wayne (Linda) Fox, Coon Rapids, Minn.; two sisters, Marlys (Jerome) Gardner, Maplewood, Minn., and Gail (Bruce) Avenson, South St. Paul, Minn.; sister-in-law, Jan Fox, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; three aunts; two uncles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
