Time magazine called her “a mermaid whose picture has blossomed on almost every newspaper in the U.S.” The New York Daily Mirror called her “a ... (New York Times)

Newark avenue named after a veteran of the Army of Northern Virginia - The Newark Advocate

Sun, Nov 13, 2011
First and Second Manassas, and the Peninsula Campaign. They were at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Bermuda Hundred, Five Forks and Salyers Creek, where he was captured April 6, 1865, by troops led by Somerset's Gen. Philip Sheridan. Henry received his medical degrees in 1868. Since his brother, Douglas, was still in Zanesville, he moved north to Licking County to set up practice. He married Mary Robinson, of Gratiot, in 1871. They purchased two lots in Brownsville in 1873, and in 1875 bought a farm in Avondale at Buckeye Lake. They also lived in Jacksontown as Henry's practice grew. They later moved to Newark. In a letter to his sister Eliza in Virginia, dated Oct. 15, 1902, Henry wrote, "We are getting in shape to turn a part of our eight acres here into town lots. Newark is extending out our way and beyond us. Our lots becoming more valuable every year, all (its) attractions here are out our way." On Aug. 9, 1905, the 24 lots of the Day Addition were added to the City of Newark. These lots made up what would be the east side of Day Avenue and were behind Dr. Day's house, which was on the corner of what is now West Main Street and Day Avenue. Henry served Newark as health official for six years and physician at the county infirmary for nine years, while still keeping his private practice at 6 1/2 W. Main St. He died at his home July 30, 1918, at the age of 79 and was buried outside Jacksontown in Fairmont Cemetery. In 1992, a Confederate marker was placed on his grave to remember his service to the Confederacy. Was the rebel reconstructed with his northern neighbors? His obituary dated July 31, 1918, reads: "It was characteristic of him that he gave un...
