Rodney King, key figure in L.A. riots, dies - Tampabay.com

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Sharpton wrote. "History will record that it was Rodney King's beating and his actions that made America deal with the excessive misconduct of law enforcement." Attorney Harland Braun, who represented one of the police officers, Ted Briseno, in the federal trial, said King's name would always be a part of Los Angeles history. "I always saw him as a sad figure swept up into something bigger than he was," Braun said. "He wasn't a hero or a villain. He was probably just a nice person." King's case never would have become such a symbol without the video, he said. "If there hadn't been a video there would have never been a case. In those days, you might have claimed excessive force but there would have been no way to prove it." The San Bernardino County coroner will perform an autopsy on King within 48 hours. Robert Morvillo, Legal Pioneer, Dies at 73

Mon, Dec 26, 2011
His mother, Marie, was a pharmacist. He graduated from Colgate University and, in 1963, from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone scholar and an editor of the Law Review. After clerking for Judge William B. Herlands, a federal judge in Manhattan, Mr. Morvillo joined the United States attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan. Mr. Morvillo was one of a group of lawyers who worked as federal prosecutors in the office in the 1960s under Robert M. Morgenthau’s leadership. He rose to become head of the office’s securities-fraud unit, which Mr. Morgenthau had formed. That unit, which had led to an increase in indictments against corporate executives, in turn created a need for white-collar defense. Later, Mr. Morvillo became chief of the office’s criminal division. Today, many of the deans of New York’s criminal-defense bar, including Gary P. Naftalis and Charles A. Stillman, served with Mr. Morvillo as assistants under Mr. Morgenthau. In 1973, Mr. Morvillo joined a boutique firm started by John S. Martin and Otto Obermaier, two of his former government colleagues. The firm was among the first that made a business out of representing businessmen and political officials in hot water. Back then, white-shoe firms in New York steered clear of those representations, which they considered déclassé. Today, every large corporate law firm has a white-collar defense practice that competes for business with Morvillo Abramowitz, which has grown to about 60 lawyers. Mr. Morvillo told his fellow lawyers he was proud that in recent years his four sons had worked with him as lawyers at his firm. In his last trial, one of his sons gave the opening argument, and Mr. Morvillo delivered the summation. Mr. Morvillo also represented large corporations, including the Hess Corporation and Merrill Lynch. But his most famous client was Martha Stewart. Early last decade, Ms. Stewart hired Mr. Morvillo to defend her from criminal charges that she lied t... (New York Times)
