A Titanic survivor's Fort Wayne roots - News Sentinel

Sun, Apr 22, 2012
Fort Wayne. The last name of her parents, Sylvenus and Mahala, was listed as Tharp in both the Illinois County marriage records for 1810-1934 and on the 1880 Census records for Edgar County, Ill., which is on the Illinois-Indiana line northwest of Terre Haute. The 1880 census shows they have a daughter, Lilly M., age 5, who was born in Indiana. Future biographical mentions of Lillian, however, list her maiden name as Thorpe rather than Tharp. And based on the census records, it appears her family didn't stay long in Fort Wayne after her birth. Adult life In young adulthood, Lillian moved to Kansas and married portrait painter Paul Lawrence, who apparently died not long after their marriage, according to the website Titanic Research. In 1903, while visiting friends in Wisconsin, she met Dr. William E. Minahan, a prominent physician in Fond du Lac, Wis., it says in the copy of her obituary on the Encyclopedia Titanica website. They married later that year, with a newspaper item saying the wedding was at the bride's home in Kansas City, and a William Minahan profile in the 1912 book “Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, past and present” stating the wedding took place in Arkansas City, Kan., which is south of Wichita. The fateful trip William and Lillian Minahan and William's sister, Daisy Minahan, had been visiting relatives in Ireland before boarding the Titanic for their trip home, Titanic Research reports. They booked first-class passage, staying in Cabin C78, Encyclopedia Titanica reports. Lillian had ticket No. 19928. When the Titanic struck the iceberg, William Minahan helped his wife and sister into Lifeboat 14, Titanic Research reports. He told them, “Be brave,” and joined other men staying on the ship so women and childr...

The Sad End of the Gingrich Campaign - New Republic

Sun, Apr 1, 2012
Mitt Romney in Tampa requires the former House speaker to continue to accumulate convention delegates. But Gingrich—after winning a combined 9 percent of the vote in Louisiana and the prior Illinois primary—is now in the goose-egg phase of his descent into irrelevance. How hard it must be for Gingrich at 68 to accept that his active political career is over for good. So Newt and Callista, according to a schedule released by the campaign Sunday, will be holding Wisconsin rallies at the end of the week in advance of the April 3 primary. It undoubtedly will be Potemkin Village Politics—scant crowds, minimal press coverage, but with the purported trappings of a presidential campaign. Since, according to Politico, Gingrich has begun paying off vocal campaign creditors, there should be enough money left for a Wisconsin weekend in presidential primary fa...

Could Kansas State's Martin top USC's list as Horn's replacement? - Greenville News

Sun, Mar 25, 2012
NCAA Tournament appearances. Smart has become the darling of big-time programs looking for the next coach on the rise. He turned down good jobs last year and just recently rebuffed an overture from Illinois, one of best jobs in the Big Ten and probably one of the top 20 or so jobs in the nation. Would Smart consider South Carolina? Maybe, but not having seen firsthand the Svengali powers of Hyman, the more likely presumption is that Smart likes it where he is, wants to continue to plot his own course and build the program. Which brings us back to Martin, whose presence would agitate every one of the 13 other basketball programs in the Southeastern Conference. Martin would bring a physical, pit bull presence to the SEC that would command attention in a year or two. At Kansas State he was able to do it immediately with the talent left behind, but there isn’t a lot on the shelves in Columbia, surely not as much as there was when Horn replaced Dave Odom. Hyman might balk at Martin because of his association with Curtis Malone, coach of an AAU team in Washington, D.C., but sometimes the appearance of a little risk is nothing more than that – it looks like something could be wrong, but it only looks that way. That might be the case with Martin and Hyman is surely researching all of the stories, like the one from the Topeka Capital-Journal last week when Kansas State’s athletic director suspended Jamar Samuels minutes before the Wildcats’ game against Syracuse: (Page 3 of 3) “Malone, reached Saturday by phone, acknowledged sending money to Samuels before the NCAA Tournament,” the Capital-Journal story reported, “but maintained the financial assistance didn’t constitute an impermissible benefit because of his pre-existing relationship with Samuels and his mother. “Are you talking about me helping a kid who has been at my program, been in Kansas for four years, whenever he’s needed help, his mom has needed me to help?” Malone said. “We are very, very close, like our families and everything. Is that a benefit?” At Kansas State, pressed against a tournament game, they decided to play it safe, Syracuse won and after the game Martin was emotional, taking a very long pause when asked about Samuels before saying only, “He’s our toughest kid.” He was also a fifth year senior who came to the arena not realizing he had already played his last game. Look carefully, Eric Hyman, this is a coach who can transform the basketball program at Carolina, in a good way. Players love him, opponents detest him and, by the way, in his four years at Kansas State his program has the highest graduation rate in the Big-12 according to the Omaha World-Herald. Some risk? Sure, there’s some risk but for a diligent athletics director, the risk doesn’t appear to be a serious concern. And by the way, isn’t there always a risk in trying to make something out of nothing? Isn’t not taking risks how you ended up looking for a new coach in the first place? ...
