Saudi heir's death opens door to younger voices - LubbockOnline.com

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
King Abdullah has now outlived two designated successors, despite ailments of his own. It’s widely expected the current succession order will stand and Nayef’s brother, Defense Minister Prince Salman — another elderly and ailing son of the country’s founding monarch — will become the No. 2 to the throne of OPEC’s top producer. But Prince Nayef’s death opens the possibility that a member of the so-called “third generation” of the royal clan will now move into one of the traditional ruler-in-waiting roles as the country looks ahead to challenges such as the nuclear path of rival Iran and Arab Spring-inspired calls for political and social reforms around the Gulf. “Saudi Arabia will have to decide if this is the time to set the next generation on the path to rule,” sa...

Former Peabody phenom pitcher Jeff Allison has message to share on the price ... - Boston.com

Sun, Mar 25, 2012
I’d be OK with that.’’ Allison would like to go to schools, reach out to the students, and help them avoid the dangers that nearly killed him. He’d like to start with his alma mater in Peabody, where his drug problems began. “I’m really tired of looking at obituaries and seeing kids that are such young ages go down like that,’’ he said. “This area is flooded with it, drug-wise, and it’s just sick. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to get myself out there and put myself out there face-first, and just let them know that no matter who you are, no matter how big you may be or what you may have, or how much money you might have in your pocket, this disease of addiction will take you down extremely fast. “I went from a hero to the goat in the matter of a month or two, and it took me down just as quickly,’’ Allison said. Afraid of jeopardizing the career that he fought so hard to get back after his drug abuse, he didn’t tell anyone about the pain in his elbow two years ago. Coming off all-star honors in 2008 and 2009 with the Single A Jupiter Hammerheads, Allison was pitching for Double A Jacksonville the next year when he felt something was wrong. “I just figured after the season ended in 2010, that I could rest it and it would be OK,’’ he said. “And once 2011 hit, spring training last season, it really wasn’t OK.’’ He believes he’s figured out his injury, and is working with physical therapist Kevin McGovern at Game 7 Sports Training in Malden to correct it. “It’s definitely going to take some work. It’s going to take some time and a lot of effort,’’ Allison said. “I wouldn’t say I’m going to have to really kill myself to get that back, but it’s definitely going to take some time and effort and patience. “I really want to get myself now where I was at three years ago, in 2009. I was in great shape. My arm was in great throwing shape, and I was very consistent with all my outings. The ball was flying out of my hand. So that’s kind of where I want to get to now.’’ When he thinks he’s ready, the Marlins will be his first call. “We never cut ties or burned any bridges,’’ Allison said. “We respect each other, and that’s kind of where it was left.’’ Allison was as dominating as a pi...
