Murphy Funeral Home on Hertel Avenue in the late 1920s. He became owner after his father died in 1976 and operated it until 2004, when he sold it and retired. A regular runner in Delaware Park, he completed four marathons, including the Skylon Marathon and the Cleveland Marathon. He created and designed the yearly T-shirt for the annual Turkey Trot. Mr. Murphy was active with the Delaware Family YMCA for more than 35 years and was cochairman of the Turkey Trot. He also was past chairman of the branch’s board of management and was twice honored as the branch volunteer of the year. In 1999, he was given the Golden Key Award, the highest volunteer honor, at the annual YMCA Buffalo Niagara dinner. He also was involved with many other North Buffalo civic organizations. Eleanor F. Heckman, 91, a lifelong Buffalonian

Mrs. Heckman possessed “an almost magically clear memory” and she enjoyed telling stories about “the old days” riding ferries to Crystal Beach and Fort Erie, Ont., as well as riding on Delaware Avenue in her grandfather’s electric car in 1936. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy H. Blasberg and Pamela Heckman; and a son, Jeffrey C. A memorial service and reception will be held in late spring. (The Buffalo News)

John G. ‘Jack’ Mathias, businessman, volunteer

Buffalo Asphalt, and often filled in during holiday time at his family’s Mathias Cigar Store. He also taught money and banking at Canisius College. In 1964, Mr. Mathias established his own company, Delaware Paving Corp., serving as president until 1983. During his retirement, Mr. Mathias embarked on a second career as a consultant and volunteer. He joined the International Executive Service Corps and served as an adviser to projects in Nicaragua, Indonesia and the Philippines from 1976 to 1985. He also worked as controller for Root Neal and Co. in the 1980s, later consulting for Root Neal and Nicaraguan friends in Miami. He also served with the Service Corps of Retired Executives in the Small Business Administration from 1987 to 1990. Active in Penn alumni affairs, he headed the university’s local Secondary School Committee, and served two terms as president of the University of Pennsylvania Club of Western New York. He headed the Penn Mask and Wig performance in Buffalo for two years. He was also a member of the CPO Club in Buffalo. Mr. Mathias attended daily Mass at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Buffalo where he was an usher. He also attended Blessed Sacrament and Annunciation churches in Buffalo as well as Assumption Church in Pompano Beach, Fla. He enjoyed many trips to Europe, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Athens, Turkey, and Asia, and spent winters in Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla.
