RC Owens dies at 77; 49ers 'alley oop' receiver - Los Angeles Times

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
No stranger to heartache, Owens was involved in a tragic car accident in June 1963 as he was driving to Colts training camp in Colorado. A tornado swept his car off the road, and his 3-year-old daughter, Pam, was killed. His 1-month-old son, Darren, sustained a fractured skull, which the family believed led to his death at age 7. After his playing career, Owens worked in public relations for J.C. Penney Co. and later in a California office for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He returned to sports to work in marketing for the Oakland Stompers soccer team. In 1979, Bill Walsh hired him to organize 49ers training camp, and Owens was reunited with the franchise that gave him his start. During more than two decades in the team's front office, he ran alumni relations for a franchise that would go on to win five Super Bowls, served as the point man for the club in the community and even donned a red suit and white beard to play Santa at Christmas. Nicole Gisele, longtime administrative assistant to Hall of Fame coach Walsh, remembered Owens as an unfailingly upbeat ambassador for the franchise: "It was his motto: 'I'm two steps away! I'll be right there!' " "You name it, R.C. did it for the players," former 49ers cornerback Eric Wright said. "Guys looked up to him. He was a mentor to a lot of the younger guys and a big brother to all of us." Owens is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughter, Melinda Grissett; son, Kelvin Owens; stepsons Ken Morrell and Anthony Salazar; stepdaughter Shelly DiStefano; and 17 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Glide Memorial Church, 330 Ellis St., San Francisco. ...

Philadelphia Phillies - TeamReport - Chicago Tribune

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Vance Worley, the second-year right-hander who has pitched brilliantly since returning from the disabled list, took a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning. The Colorado Rockies, meanwhile, came into the game having lost 12 of their last 13 games and looked ripe for the taking. But the Phils aren't in last place by accident.Jimmy Rollins' leadoff home run off Jeff Francis -- the 39th leadoff home run of his career -- was the only run the Phillies scored in a 4-1 loss to Colorado. Worley served up a two-out, two-ru...

Cleveland Indians - TeamReport - Chicago Tribune

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
June, Jimenez is 2-1 with a 2.05 ERA. He has looked a lot closer to being the pitcher the Indians thought they were trading for nearly a year ago, when they sent four minor-league prospects to Colorado for the 28-year-old right-hander. Jimenez's improved starts come at an opportune time for a couple of reasons. One of those is that the Indians play just eight games at home in June, and they have already played them. All of their remaining games this month are on the road. The other reason is that No. 1 starter Justin Masterson, who pitched a three-hitter in an 8-1 win over Cincinnati on Thursday, is also pitching the best he has pitched all season. In order for the Indians to remain a contender, they are going to need the leadership from the top of the rotation that Masterson and Jimenez can provide. With both pitchers now pitching better than they have all year, that bodes well for the Indians on this road trip. ----------------------------------------------- MLB Team Report - Cleveland Indians - NOTES, QUOTES --RHP Chris Perez extended his streak of consecutive saves to 23 by striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth inning of the Indians' 2-0 win over Houston on Friday. "He pitched very aggressively and was lights out," manager Manny Acta said. Perez blew a save on opening day but is 23-for-23 in save situations since then. The 23 saves lead the major leagues. --RHP Ubaldo Jimenez pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings to get the win in the Indians' 2-0 win over Houston o...
