Archie C. Ripstein, 92, excavating contractor

Europe, attaining the rank of sergeant. Returning from service, he was a superintendent for Thornton Guardrail, which installed highway guardrails in downstate New York, notably on the Taconic and Palisades parkways. He moved back to Western New York in 1951 and started his own excavating company, working primarily on commercial projects for electrical and plumbing contractors. He retired in 1984. Mr. Ripstein was an inventor and held several patents. One of his inventions was the Power Mole, which pushes pipes under roads without digging. He also devised tools to simplify tasks at home. Milton Brodsky, formerly of Easton, Pennsylvania, died peacefully September 18, surrounded by his beloved wife of almost 61 years and his loving daughter, Eileen Brodsky of Pacific Palisades. He was 87. Born in 1923 in Ridgewood, New York, Brodsky lived in Easton when he married Jacqueline Reininger. They raised their family on College Hill in Easton. Milton attended Columbia University and New York University, earning a degree in accounting. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.
