One thing leads to another, like the mystery man on the hill - Richmond Daily News

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Masons, from Greenland’s icy mountains to India’s coral strand, where Africa’s sunny fountains roll down their golden sands, etc.“The services were begun by singing ‘Onward Christian Soldiers,’  Mr. W.S. Alnutt leading the singing, with Miss Benora Maddux presiding gracefully at the piano, after which prayer was offered by the pastor, followed by the singing of ‘Blest Be the Tie That Binds.’“Professor W.S. Drace then read the minutes of the preliminary meeting of the first Grand Lodge in London 1717 and the minutes of the occasion when four lodges met in the World’s metropolis on June 24, 1717.“The sermon of Rev. Aker was so good all the way through that The Missourian regrets that it is not here printed in full. The secretary of Richmond Lodge, Mr. Durward Brady, expressed the sentiments of all who heard it when he said to the writer, ‘I marveled at its excellence. It was the finest address that I ever heard on Masonry in all my life.’“Brother Aker said there are 2,000,000 Masons in the world, and his tribute to the order was as beautiful as it was true. Wiles-Smith founder's widow enjoyed 'a good life'

Fri, Feb 17, 2012
It was just a very busy place. People would meet there for lunch. It had a good lunch, a good soda fountain. Children would come there after school to get sodas and such," said Mrs. Wiles' daughter, Wanda Crowe. "You could sit down in a booth, visit with people." That atmosphere persists today, as the lunch counter still serves customers at what is billed as the city's oldest independent pharmacy. Even years after her husband sold his interest to Charles Smith, Mrs. Wiles herself still visited the store for lunch and prescriptions. In fact, until she got sick a few months ago, Mrs. Wiles still lived a full life, her family said. She didn't drive anymore, but she still went out to eat on a regular basis, still went shopping at Dillard's if they were having a sale, still made her famous cake. "She just didn't seem old," her granddaughter Vicki said. Just last September, when she turned 100, Mrs. Wiles welcomed friends and family for a celebration at her Midtown home. She said something then, amidst all the well wishes, that her family will likely draw on for comfort in the days to come. "It's a wonderful feeling -- wonderful," she said. "I've had a good life." Closing of Sproule's 'a little sad' - Orangeville Banner

Sun, Jan 22, 2012
Broadway every chance I get, whether it be to stop at a place like Korsten’s or eat at a favourite restaurant.   For me though, shopping in Orangeville’s downtown was never about facades or fountains or festivals. It was, and still is, a chance to deal with good people.  With the closing of Sproule’s there are a couple less of them now, and that’s just a little sad. Doug Harkness is a longtime member of the local business and volunteer community.  He takes a keen interest in local politics.
