Jury to begin hearing Texas bomb plot trial - U-T San Diego

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Authorities say they were tipped to Aldawsari's online purchases by chemical company Carolina Biological Supply of Burlington, N.C., and shipping company Con-way Freight on Feb. 1, 2011. The chemical company reported a $435 suspicious purchase to the FBI, while the shipping company notified Lubbock police and the FBI because it appeared the order wasn't intended for commercial use. Court records show that Aldawsari had successfully ordered 30 liters of nitric acid and three gallons of concentrated sulfuric acid in December 2010. Aldawsari also kept a handwritten journal in Arabic in which he said he had been planning a terror attack in the U.S. for years, even before he came to the country on a scholarship, and that it was "time for jihad," or holy war, according to court documents. He bemoaned the plight of Muslims and said he was influenced by Osama bin Laden's speeches. U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter ruled last week that prosecutors can use footage from videos found on Aldawsari's computer, including one in which Ayman al-Zawahri, al-Qaida's current leader, praises as martyrs two unspecified individuals killed by "American Crusaders." Two instructional videos that he also allowed show how to prepare the explosive picric acid and how to use a cellphone as a remote detonator.

Mr. Johnson, who died Sunday of complications from pneumonia. He was 73. Mr. Johnson spent 44 years working for the railroad, including 36 years as an engineer for Burlington Northern, but his first matter of business after graduating from Memphis Tech in 1956 was Army basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. "He was a longtime Army buddy, and he married a Scrapper," said Coker, referring to South Side's mascot. "George was a great guy and we're going to miss him." Married for more than 53 years, Shirley says she never missed a baseball or football game her husband was coaching. "I went to every one of them," she said. "He helped over 60 boys get college scholarships. He'd write letters for them. He would have coaches come and watch them play." The McAlister American Legion squad finished second place at state in 1989 and captured third in '83, '86 and '88. The 1984 club earned a trip to t... (The Commercial Appeal)
