2012 Olympic parties set near Kensington Palace - San Francisco Chronicle

Mon, Dec 26, 2011
ELSEWHERE California returns to IndyCar schedule The IndyCar schedule will have a different look in 2012. China will host its first race Aug. 19, series officials have put Detroit and Fontana (San Bernardino County) back on the schedule, and only four of 15 races are slated for ovals. It could change again, too. Series CEO Randy Bernard acknowledged he might add two races. The schedule had been delayed as the series conducted an investigation into the October crash that killed two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon at Las Vegas. Some critics contended it was too dangerous for the series to race on ovals and only four - Indianapolis, Texas, Iowa and Fontana - appear on the 2012 calendar. -- Kurt Busch has a new ride. NASCAR's most polarizing figure announced he will drive the No. 51 car for Phoenix Racing and owner James Finch for the entire 2012 Sprint Cup season. Busch, who has driven Fords and Dodges, will drive the No. 51 Phoenix Construction Chevrolet Impala in 2012. -- Coming off a Formula One season in which it won only one race, Ferrari plans to introduce a completely revised 2012 car in early February. Former Gov. Claude Kirk dead - The Ledger

Sat, Oct 8, 2011
Republican Gov. Bob Martinez's bid for re-election he instead filed to take on Betty Castor, the Democrat, for state education commissioner. He lost. Claude Roy Kirk Jr. was born in San Bernardino, Calif., where his parents, Claude Sr. and Sarah Mrytle McClure Kirk both worked as a railroad clerks. The family later moved to Chicago where his father sold mobile homes. During his teens, he and his family moved again, this time to Montgomery, Ala., where the father manufactured vending machines and worked for a while as secretary to the Alabama House of Representatives. After graduating from Lanier High School in Montgomery in 1943, during World War II, the future governor joined the Marine Corps Reserves and served with an artillery unit in the United States. He was discharged as a second lieutenant. He enrolled at Emory University in Atlanta but later transferred to Duke University in Durham, N.C., where he earned a bachelor of science degree. A law degree from the University of Alabama followed in 1949. A short time later, he was called back into the Marines during the Korean conflict. He served aboard the battleship USS New Jersey after duty with the 1st Marine Division. He was awarded the Air Medal of the Marine Corps and discharged in 1952 as a first lieutenant. Down to his last $408, he sold insurance and building supplies until forming the American Heritage Life Insurance Co. in Jacksonville in 1956 with the financial backing of a brother-in-law and other investors. Devoted exclusively to insuring the lives of the wealthy, the company became one of the most successful in the industry and earned for its founder the reputation of a prodigy. He left the firm in 1962 and bought a Florida partnership in Hayden Stone Inc., the New York investment firm, but turned to politics after 18 months. A Democrat until 1960, he switched that year to the GOP and campaigned for Richard M. Nixon for the presidency. Four years later he went after a seat in the U.S. Senate, taking on the Florida incumbent, Spessard L. Holland. Campaigning as an ultra-conservative, he drew 562,212 votes but lost to Holland. After a brief attempt at a business venture in Brazil, he returned to Florida in 1966 and ran for governor. Although Democrats outnumbered Republicans in Florida by almost five to one, the Democrats were badly divided. Miami Mayor Robert King High had defeated the Democratic incumbent governor, the late Haydon Burns, in a bitter primary and Burns refused to throw his support to High in the general election. Burns, who served a special two-year term, did not openly support the Republican but some of his close friends reportedly contributed heavily to the Kirk campaign treasury. During his term the state Constitution was revised and the entire state government re...
