Robert C. Pierpoint, CBS reporter covered Korean War, 6 presidents

Tue, Oct 25, 2011
Pierpoint said. Mr. Pierpoint covered the White House for 23 years, a period he chronicled in his 1981 memoir, “At the White House.” Born in Redondo Beach, Calif., he graduated from the University of Redlands. While a graduate student at the University of Stockholm, he began work as a CBS stringer and found his calling. In the Nixon era, Mr. Pierpoint, like many reporters, occasionally sparred with the president. Once, at a news conference, Mr. Pierpoint asked Nixon about his supposed anger with the press. “Don’t get the impression that you’ve aroused my anger,” Nixon said. “I am very sorry, sir,” Mr. Pierpoint responded, “but I have that impression.” “You see,” Nixon said, “one can only be angry with those he respects.” Some may have regarded the comment as a withering put-down; it was also seen as a sign of Mr. Pierpoint’s eagerness to pursue the news. He also didn’t hesitate to give his opinion on the directions the White House went after he left, saying recently that he was not impressed with President Obama. “He’s not a fighter. He surrenders to Congress before it’s necessary,” Mr. Pierpoint said. Surviving in addition to his wife are four children. The Washington Post contributed to this report. (The Buffalo News)
