Elvis Presley's Memphis, Tenn., crypt pulled from auction block after ... - Greenfield Daily Reporter

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Gladys, after he died Aug. 16, 1977, and reburied later at Graceland. On June 22, 2012, Elvis Presley's crypt was pulled from the auction due to fan outcry. (AP Photo/Julien's Auctions, File) LOS ANGELES — Elvis Presley's crypt has left the auction block. Celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien said Friday that his company has agreed not to sell the crypt after fans worldwide demanded that it be kept as a shrine to his memory. Julien's Auctions announced in May that it would sell the empty tomb at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., at its "Music Icons" auction Sunday. Julien said the company won't sell the crypt "until Forest Hills finds a plan that best suits the interests of the fans while respecting and preserving the memory of Elvis Presley." Presley was interred there alongside his mother, Gladys, after he died Aug. 16, 1977. Two months later, they were reburied at his Graceland home. The original crypt has remained e...

Cudahy arrests add salt to LA County area's civic wounds - Los Angeles Times

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Just two years ago, a City Hall scandal in Bell touched off a round of community anger amid the working-class cities that hug the 710 Freeway in southeast Los Angeles County. Finally, local activists thought, their elected representatives would straighten up, knowing that their actions were being scrutinized and that government malfeasance could mean they would go to jail. It hasn't quite worked out that way. On Friday, three city officials in Cudahy were arrested on bribery charges — related to crimes that allegedly occurred this year. The federal ...

Charlotte Bobcats hire Mike Dunlap as coach - Chicago Sun-Times

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
He was originally one of the 10 candidates to interview for the job, but the team trimmed the list to former Utah coach Jerry Sloan, Indiana assistant coach Brian Shaw and Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Quin Snyder last week. At some point Dunlap re-entered the picture and was offered and accepted the job Monday night. A text message sent to Dunlap was not immediately returned. Dunlap, 54, will replace Paul Silas, whose contract was not renewed after Charlotte finished with the worst winning percentage in NBA history this past season. The Bobcats were 7-59. A former assistant coach with the Denver Nuggets, Dunlap assumed all duties with the St. John’s program after head coach Steve Lavin took a leave of absence to deal with prostate cancer. Dunlap has spent most of his career at the college level and has worked under Lute Olson in Arizona. He joined St. John’s after serving as the associate head coach on Pac-10 staffs at Arizona and Oregon. Arizona went 21-14 in 2008-09, advancing to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 before ending the season with a loss to top-seeded Louisville in the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinal game. Dunlap joined Oregon’s staff in 2009-10 and the Ducks posted a 16-16 record. Prior to working at Arizona and Oregon, Dunlap spent two seasons in the NBA with the Nuggets working under head coach George Karl. The Nuggets compiled a 95-69 (.579) r...

Clark Aided Blacks on 'Bandstand'? Not Always - The Root

Sun, Apr 22, 2012
While the nationally televised dance program hosted a number of prominent black performers, the show regularly blocked black teenagers from its studio audience until it moved from Philadelphia to Los Angeles in 1964. The image of teenagers that American Bandstand popularized bore little resemblance to the racial diversity of American teens. When American Bandstand started broadcasting nationally in 1957, it had to avoid being tainted by the anti-rock and roll protests taking place across the country. City councils from Jersey City to Santa Cruz to San Antonio had banned rock performances, and radio stations in Pittsburgh, Chicago, Denver, Lubbock and Cincinnati refused to play rock and roll. The fear was in large part fueled by concerns about racial mixing, and on that front, Bandstand was indeed groundbreaking. Clark's show put African-American music and performers on television every day. While it featured a sanitized version of rock and roll, with white teen idols such as Bobby Rydell and Frankie Avalon, American Bandstand also hosted black vocal groups such as the Coasters and t...

Playoff Puck Previews: Penguins, Canucks face the handshake line; Cosmo ranks ... - Yahoo! Sports (blog)

Sun, Apr 22, 2012
Whoever they put in there, we've got to do a job against their top guys and be disciplined." Game 4 Preview (Kings lead 3-0) Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings, 7:30 p.m. The Kings go for the kill against Cory Schneider and the Vancouver Canucks … although they're less concerned about the kill than they are the power play. But their kill will get tested tonight: Daniel Sedin will return from his concussion to attempt to rally the Canucks back from the brink. Game 4 Preview (Rangers lead 2-1) New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators, 7:30 p.m. The Sens are likely without Daniel Alfredsson. But Matt Carkner's back to fill the offensive void. Brian Boyle is popular, according to Rangers Rants: "Artem Anisimov, trapped on the other side of Boyle, treated it with more humor. Then again, Anisimov may be the funniest guy in the room. Anisimov quipped that the media needed to start lining up to get to Boyle and Anisimov pointed to an imaginary line th...

Roger C. Molander Dies at 71; Stirred Nuclear Protests

Sun, Apr 1, 2012
Earl, Mr. Molander is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Moore; another daughter, Ingrid Molander; and two granddaughters. Earl and Roger Molander wrote an article for The Los Angeles Times in April 1982, pushing the idea that Russian-American conviviality might help peace. “So bring on the Russians,” they wrote. “Try their vodka, listen to their music, read their novels, watch them dance. Maybe take one to lunch and start a conversation on a topic of mutual interest. Try ‘the fate of the earth,’ for starters.” ... (New York Times)

Houston: 'Closure,' sadness and inevitability - Greenville News

Sun, Mar 25, 2012
But not surprise. “We are saddened to learn of the toxicology results, although we are glad to now have closure,” Patricia Houston, the singer’s sister-in-law and manager, said in a statement. The Los Angeles County coroner’s preliminary report Thursday also noted that marijuana, the anti-anxiety drug Xanax, the muscle relaxant Flexeril and the allergy medication Benadryl were found in the 48-year-old singer’s blood but did not contribute to her death. The drug link “came as no surprise to many of us wh...
